I don’t see how his early rearing had been helpful to him at all. Without our school system at Summerhill with the Ombudsmen and Meetings, I think he would have grown into a very selfish person with little insight into the needs of others or any idea at all of the fact that people sometimes have to learn to toe-the-line whether they like it or not.

Interestingly, this boy was a very kind soul, which came to the fore as he grew older. He became quite a solid ‘big kid’ in the school and was thoughtful in discussing the younger one’s cases in the school Meeting, becoming a bit of a village ‘elder’ — and much respected. A while back, we had a young boy of five who only came in as a day pupil, not a boarder.

His home was nearby the school and one day he went home to collect something he had forgotten. He was brought up in the school Meeting and his sanction was not to be allowed to come to school until lunchtime the following day. He loved it at school and was somewhat stroppy about this, having a bit of a tantrum and sulking, but the community in the Meeting made it clear that he would have to observe this fine, which he did.

He never went home out of hours again. In fact, after a couple of terms of having various fines, he became a different citizen altogether — he was sociable, played much better with his peers and seldom if ever, got brought up in the Meetings. He was also swift to offer advice in a mature and helpful fashion if he thought there had been an injustice.

All text: © Worldwide Copyright Zoë Neill Readhead 2021 Published by: the A. You taught me how to love and what to look for in all people – humour, warmth, strength and humanity. You gave me Summerhill and everything it stands for – it set the standard by which I would live my life and rear my children. Through many trials and tribulations, I have remained optimistic and loved the world and the people in it.

I hope that I have been able to pass on what you taught me to some people… Remembering Rosie, Posie, John and Lon who eventually went down the plughole in our bath, Mr Wise Owl and Mr Silly Owl and how every book you read to me had to begin with: ‘Once upon a time there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter …’

Although you would find today’s world a mystery, I wish you could be here. I miss you so very much. Summerhill School founded by A. S. Neill in 1921 1kitap1.com/en INTRODUCTION I think that my circumstances and thus my experience of child-rearing may well be unique.

I was born and raised at Summerhill and have stayed closely involved with it all of my life. After raising four children in the fashion that I absorbed from my father’s methods and as a former Summerhill pupil myself, I have continued working, living and learning about the school and the people in it throughout my adult life. This has given me a unique opportunity to watch the way children in this rare environment grow and develop unfettered by adult expectations and surrounded by the freedom that Summerhill offers.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
