It didn\u2019t happen often. Most of the town had their rhythms and never changed. But occasionally, they had a few extra visitors, and having the food put up ahead of time to quickly open and serve a hearty stew or a delicious soup was something he would never take for granted again. If only he could afford to give her a raise. She deserved it. \u201cThank you,\u201d he said quietly, wondering if she would know that he meant for more than just the soup.<\/p>\n

She smiled up at him, and his whole day grew brighter. \u201cYou\u2019re welcome,\u201d she said, resting her hand on his shoulder for a moment before turning and walking back into the tavern. Roan was ready to tear his hair out of his head. He had been fighting the balance sheet for the past hour and was no closer to figuring out why he couldn\u2019t make everything work properly. The fact that the numbers didn\u2019t quite match wasn\u2019t what bothered him. What bothered him was the fact that it seemed he was losing money.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t know how to stop it, but if he didn\u2019t stop it, he could lose everything. Roan ran his hand down his face and sighed. This was not what he\u2019d been hoping for. When he sat down to work on this, he\u2019d been hoping to find that he had miscalculated and would be able to work it all out. Instead, he found more bills that he didn\u2019t remember paying, and more vendors than he could expect to pay with the usual number of patrons his tavern hosted on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

It all seemed rather hopeless, and he didn\u2019t like hopeless. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing wrong,\u201d he said to Beastie, who was sitting at his feet, staring up at him. \u201cI feel like I should be better at this, but I\u2019m not, and I don\u2019t know how to fix it.\u201d It wasn\u2019t a new problem. He\u2019d first realized it was bad last winter, when he\u2019d started trying to court Beatrice, the librarian.<\/p>\n

That hadn\u2019t gone well, of course\u2014who could ever learn to love the town beast? All it had done was convince everyone that a beast was all he was. His grandparents had been a team\u2014his grandfather doing the day-to-day running of the tavern, and his grandmother doing all the behind-the-scenes work, including the accounting. He\u2019d hoped that he could find that, too.<\/p>\n

Roan Alder clutched the ledger to his chest with one hand as he reached out to save himself from landing on his face, his fingers barely catching on the edge of his desk. He glared down at Beastie, who looked up at him with her long brown tail wagging. \u201cYou\u2019re trouble, you know that?\u201d he grumbled as he sat down at his desk.<\/p>\n

Almost as much trouble as these numbers. Roan scowled at the numbers in the ledger in front of him. He had thought that as he grew more experienced, he would find it easier to turn a profit, but things were still getting worse. Poring over the accounts would only make him crankier. He slammed the ledger shut, getting to his feet and heading out the door of his office.<\/p>\n

Beastie jumped to her feet and followed him, her long tail wagging and thumping against his thigh as she passed him in the doorway. He closed and locked his office door behind him as he made his way to the front room, where his patrons gathered, toasting each other after another long day. Normally, he would have enjoyed the levity, but not tonight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
