When the ramp wasn’t an option, the troop door was the manually operated alternative. Fontaine felt around in the dark looking for the handle while the other members of the squad coughed uncontrollably. “Hurry up goddammit!” “Found it!” Fontaine worked the locking mechanism and disengaged it, before tugging on the large handle and rotating it 180 degrees. The thick armored door groaned under squeaky hinges as it swung open.

Smoke rolled out of the open door while wan rays of sunlight streaked into the compartment. They all popped their restraints, and Fontaine was the first one out. Disoriented, he looked around to assess the situation only to get slammed hard in the shoulder and knocked to the ground. The others came falling out of the back of the burning IFV, tripping over Fontaine, while kinetic rounds cracked overhead.

They immediately wheeled around, taking cover behind the hulk, dragging their wounded comrade with them. Goina spotted the driver rolling around on the snowy gravel, howling in pain. “Eggers, go see to him.” “Roger!” said one of the assistant gunners, darting off to take care of his buddy, digging compresses out of his aid kit. Instinctively Goina counted noses and grunted in satisfaction seeing all of his people there. Up the road the mortar tracks popped their rooftop hatches and the tubes emerged, while crews scrambled to unbox ammunition.

They were getting hammered with machine gun fire and tried to stay low in the protection of their vehicles as best they could. Goina peeked over the lip of the vehicle with a pair of binoculars, suddenly realizing the platoon sergeant and the gunner were still in the turret with the vehicle ablaze, burning out of control. “Doogan, wake up!” Sergeant Okoro shook his gunner while the man’s head lolled from side to side until he came to. “I’m good… I’m good. What happened?” We’re hit and the power’s out.

Can you see through the auxiliary sight?” Smoke quickly filled the turret and stung Okoro’s nose, the taste of burnt plastic and oil coating his tongue. He started coughing while producing a small flashlight, sweeping it across the control panels inside the turret. Everything was dead, even the overpressure system that might have cleared out some of the smoke. Doogan grabbed the auxiliary sight and thumbed the release catch, rotating it down into position.

He leaned his face up against it and peered through the glass.

No portion of this book may be reproduced in any form without written permission from the publisher or author, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. It was my old college roommate and partner in crime, Doug Burbey, who convinced me I should start writing. My dear wife chimed in and told me in no uncertain terms that I needed a hobby, so with both of those people giving me “the nudge” I embarked on this fledgling writing career.

That was seven novels ago. Since then I’ve picked up a number of very supportive friends who’ve helped me out along the way and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention them. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge them for all their hard work, in no particular order.

First, I’d like to thank Steve Murphy for his inspirational words and his support as a beta reader.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
