Dale steps up beside me, his eyes going to where Ray is. \u201cHe\u2019s been at it for hours,\u201d he mutters. \u201cI didn\u2019t want him walking into the apartment with her and you finding out like that.\u201d I turn on him sharply. \u201cSo, you thought I\u2019d prefer to see it here?\u201d His jaw tightens. \u201cI thought you should know.\u201d \u201cKnow what?\u201d I snap. \u201cThat he\u2019s moved on already?\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s a mess,\u201d Dale says quietly. \u201cAnd you haven\u2019t been together long.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tense, and he pauses, wincing slightly. \u201cI just thought . . .\u201d He hesitates, then exhales. \u201cI like you, Wynter. I think you would\u2019ve been good for him. But right now,\u201d he glances towards Ray, \u201che\u2019s making it pretty clear he wants you gone.\u201d The air leaves my lungs. Gone. \u201cIs that what he said?\u201d Dale shrugs. \u201cIsn\u2019t it obvious?\u201d My arms wrap around myself instinctively, like I can hold everything together long enough to stay upright.<\/p>\n

If I leave, I have nowhere else to go. Except home. \u201cHey,\u201d Ray\u2019s voice cuts through everything. He stumbles towards me, unsteady on his feet, dragging the woman with him. \u201cThere she is,\u201d he slurs, grinning like this is all some kind of joke. I stare, not moving as he closes the distance. \u201cI thought I\u2019d bring us a guest back,\u201d he continues, pulling the woman tighter into his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bed\u2019s big enough for three.\u201d The woman giggles, and my face burns with embarrassment. \u201cI told her you\u2019re new to it,\u201d he adds, his eyes glinting cruelly. \u201cInexperienced. She\u2019s more than happy to show you a few things.\u201d Something inside me snaps. I narrow my eyes. \u201cFuck you.\u201d He laughs, glancing at the woman who follows his lead and laughs too.<\/p>\n

My heart twists painfully, my face burning brighter with humiliation. \u201cI\u2019m going to bed,\u201d I say, holding his gaze. \u201cAlone.\u201d I take a breath. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll be gone in the morning.\u201d I turn to walk away, needing distance before I fall apart in front of all of them, but Ray grabs me. His fingers clamp around my arm and yank me back, my body jolting with the force. \u201cAbout time you took the hint,\u201d he spits, his words slurred but sharp enough to cut. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve said two words to you since she died and still you hang around.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart aches, like it\u2019s being squeezed harder than my arm. \u201cI . . .<\/p>\n

Since then? Nothing but bad luck. My phone shrills in my pocket. I pull it out, take a steadying breath, and answer. \u201cLucy, hi,\u201d I say brightly. \u201cWynter, how\u2019s it going?\u201d she asks. Aunt Lucy. My dad\u2019s sister. They\u2019re close, and she\u2019s been like a mother to me since mine died two years ago. \u201cGreat. How\u2019s Dad?\u201d \u201cBeing a pain in my arse,\u201d she says with a laugh, and I hear him grumble in the background. Moments like this make my chest ache.<\/p>\n
