To achieve this strategic breakthrough, Russia had assigned the entire 72nd Motor Rifle Division from XLIV Corps and the elite 80th Arctic Motor Rifle Brigade from XIV Corps. Defending the vast area were just two Finnish brigades, both of which were in reality just a single Jäger (light infantry) battalion, with a few supporting units.

The Kainuu Brigade was based at Kajaani, while the Lapland Brigade was based at Rovaniemi. NATO had forces based in the south of the country at Mikkeli, a town near to the Karelian border with Russia. Battlegroup Finland was first proposed in 2025 by Sweden, and it came into being as a battalion-size unit in 2027, four years after Finland joined NATO.

By 2033, the battlegroup had grown to a full brigade with supporting units. It was led and mostly manned by Swedish troops. The battlegroup was integrated into a pre- existing British-led multinational military framework called the Joint Expeditionary Force. The force, popularly called the Baltic Protector after the name of its first large-scale exercise in 2019, consisted of various rapid- deployment forces from ten northern European countries (Britain, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden).

It was the brainchild of General Sir David Richards, the British Chief of Defense Staff in 2012. The force had come into being in 2015, and Finland and Sweden had participated in it since 2018, which was long before they became members of NATO. One of the battlegroup’s four battalions was based in the north of Finland at Sodankylä. It was known within NATO as Lapland Force. In 2033, the force was led by a Swede, Colonel Lief Aalberg, and it consisted primarily of a battalion from the Norrland Dragoon Regiment, Sweden’s specialist unit in arctic warfare.

The battalion had supporting troops from Britain, Norway and Denmark. On May 29, two weeks after the offensive in southern Finland began, the Russians advanced into northern Finland. Three battalion-size combat units had to defend the vast wilderness of northern Finland against what was effectively eleven Russian battalions. Eleven to three—steep odds.

The Finnish strategy was to defend in depth and to trade ground for time. The vast woodland wilderness, with few roads and many lakes and impassible marshes, presented many opportunities to ambush the Russian troops—and this the Finns frequently did to great effect. The example of the old victory at nearby Suomussalmi in 1939 was often used to inspire the Finnish troops.

Copyright © 2025 Mark Tushingham This book is a work of fiction.
