The terrible injustice of his bitter words, echoing Giles\u2019s cruel slander, stabbed her to the heart. Had they been anywhere else but on the sleekly beautiful boat she would have rounded on Nathan with a devastating tirade and cut the ground from under his feet. But concentrating as she was on simply surviving, she had neither time nor energy enough.<\/p>\n

\u2018Why not?\u2019 she flung back at him. \u2018It\u2019s what men have been doing for centuries.\u2019 She drew in a shaky breath. The look on his face made her recoil inwardly. But though her cheeks flamed she held his gaze. \u2018Why are you asking about the headsail?\u2019 she enquired, steering the conversation on to less painful ground. \u2018Is something wrong?\u2019 \u2018One of the ropes seems to be jammed.\u2019 Though his tone was abrupt, Polly sensed a lessening of tension in him at the change of subject. She was overwhelmed by a mixture of terror and relief as he left her at the wheel and went forward to free the line.<\/p>\n

How long could she keep up the pretence of being a competent sailor? She risked a glance back over her shoulder. The towering cliffs of Gibraltar were still all too clearly visible. She gritted her teeth. She had to keep going. A few minutes later Nathan jumped down into the cockpit once more and hauled out the roller-reefed headsail.<\/p>\n

As it filled, Seawitch leaped forward. Nathan\u2019s gaze flicked over sails, lines, winches and compass, in a swift visual check. Polly half turned, ready to return control of the boat to him. \u2018Right, I\u2019ll leave you to it, then.\u2019<\/p>\n

In the streaked and dusty glass she glimpsed her reflection and saw a drawn elfin face and green eyes huge with anxiety. Her dark curly hair, cut short for convenience rather than fashion, clung like damp feathers to her forehead and temples. This couldn\u2019t be happening. Not to her. Gleaming like a huge silver bird, a passenger jet approached the runway which pointed like a finger out into the sparkling sapphire waters of Gibraltar Bay.<\/p>\n

Engines roaring, it swooped in to land, braking hard as its wheels touched the wide runway which was crossed halfway along by the single road connecting the British colony to the Spanish mainland. This was the fourth plane Polly had heard arrive since she had been literally dragged from the boat, marched along the marina, and bundled into the white-painted Customs building. \u2018Try to see the situation from my point of view, Miss Levington.\u2019 On the far side of the desk the shirt-sleeved Customs officer leaned back in his chair and lit a cigarette, blowing a thin plume of smoke towards the cracked and yellowing ceiling.<\/p>\n

Stockily built, with unshockable brown eyes and black hair liberally laced with grey, he spoke in a tone of weary cynicism. \u2018Do you seriously expect me to believe you knew nothing about it?\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
