I tackled the dishes, the hot water nearly scalding my hands, but it felt good to see everything sparkly clean. We worked our way through the hallway next, clearing shoes and random volleyball gear. Presley grabbed a broom to sweep up the sand that somehow made it inside\u2014that was a never-ending battle when you lived right by the beach.<\/p>\n

Eventually, we checked the bathrooms to confirm they were presentable. By the time we finished, we were both sweaty and exhausted. Still, Presley surveyed the now orderly house with satisfaction. \u201cNot bad,\u201d she said, wiping her brow. \u201cAt least we\u2019re not living in a dump anymore.\u201d I grinned and gave her a thumbs-up. \u201cI\u2019d call this a success.\u201d She chuckled softly, then set the broom aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for the help,\u201d she said. \u201cI know housekeeping\u2019s not the most thrilling job.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s all part of the gig,\u201d I joked. \u201cNow, hopefully, we can keep it this way for at least a day or two.\u201d With the place looking decent, Presley and I parted ways. She went upstairs, presumably to tackle her own personal space, and I stepped out onto the back patio to cool down.<\/p>\n

The breeze felt great on my overheated skin. I sipped from a bottle of water, letting the salty air fill my lungs. That\u2019s when Zoey poked her head out the sliding door. \u201cHey, you got a minute?\u201d I turned. \u201cYeah, sure.\u201d She pressed her lips together thoughtfully. \u201cMy room\u2019s quieter. Come upstairs?\u201d \u201cLead the way,\u201d I said. Her bedroom was on the second floor, the one with a big bay window that overlooked the side of the house. She closed the door behind us and motioned for me to sit on her bed.<\/p>\n

She wore a casual tank top and a tiny pair of shorts, her blonde hair a bit tousled like she\u2019d been napping. \u201cSo,\u201d she began, sitting next to me. \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking about Brynn. She seems\u2026interested in you. Or at least suspicious.\u201d I let out a nervous laugh. \u201cYeah, she asked me if I was hooking up with other people on the team.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t say too much, but she isn\u2019t exactly clueless.\u201d Zoey propped a pillow behind her back. \u201cWe\u2019ve lived together for a while. She\u2019s perceptive. She sees you and Kinsley, me and you. It\u2019s not rocket science.\u201d I sighed. \u201cI know. I figure it\u2019s only a matter of time before she figures it all out.<\/p>\n

She hasn\u2019t started a fight or anything. She just asked me what\u2019s going on.\u201d Zoey nodded. \u201cSo maybe we should talk about how to handle that. If you\u2019re hooking up with Kinsley, that\u2019s one thing, but if Brynn\u2019s also joining in\u2026 that\u2019s a whole new dynamic.\u201d I paused to consider. \u201cI haven\u2019t hooked up with Brynn, just to be clear.\u201d Zoey shrugged. \u201cNot yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI half-expected you to bail.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m here, aren\u2019t I?\u201d I said, setting my water bottle on the floor next to the squat rack. \u201cDidn\u2019t want to give you an excuse to call me lazy.\u201d She laughed. \u201cNo excuses needed. Let\u2019s see how strong you actually are.\u201d Brynn had taken it upon herself to teach me proper form for a variety of lifts, mostly because I\u2019d confessed that working out was a new habit for me. She insisted we start with squats to build full-body strength.<\/p>\n
