Prentice had his three sergeants\u2014Sir Gennet, Porth and Guillam of the Fangs, Claws, and Roar respectively. Farringdon\u2019s sergeants were Sir Sedgemark, Sir Nunel, and Sir Markas, who served as both banner sergeant and leader of the Lion Banner\u2019s Claws, at least for the moment. The leader of Farringdon\u2019s Roar had perished during the battles around Aubrey and in the rush had not been replaced.<\/p>\n

Nunel had also been serving double duty in that regard. \u201cI\u2019ll need to promote someone in the next few days,\u201d Farringdon had said as he met with Prentice privately earlier in the day. \u201cDo you have any recommendations for me?\u201d \u201cOnly that your judgement is sound, and you should trust it, My Lord,\u201d Prentice had answered him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are your men, and your word is law.\u201d He wanted there to be no misunderstandings between them. With any matter that did not concern the combined command of the two banners, the knight captain did not answer to the knight commander for a thing, not even \u201cadvice.\u201d The two-banner structure was not going to work any other way. Two others were present at the start of the meeting\u2014Lyrach, former squire without sponsor and now a line first of the Gryphon Roar, and Solomon, who seemed to sprout new height with every passing week.<\/p>\n

Already he was closing in on Prentice\u2019s tallness, his limbs long and lanky as a result. \u201cLyrach I wanted you here to give you a choice,\u201d Prentice had told the line first in front of all his seniors. \u201cYou are skilled with horse, sword, and shot. As good as most standing here.\u201d \u201cGood as some, mayhaps,\u201d Guillam muttered, but Lyrach ignored the man. The pair mocked each other mercilessly but would have each other\u2019s backs in the face of hell itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI planned to ask Knight Captain Farringdon,\u201d Prentice went on, ignoring the interruption, \u201cto give you a horse of your own and a place with the lancers, though it would mean a demotion as they have no line firsts yet.\u201d With only a single cohort and a horseman\u2019s more independent mindset for combat, Farringdon had yet to need to appoint line firsts or even a corporal.<\/p>\n

Nunel had been officer enough up until now.<\/p>\n
