By late afternoon George Halfkenny had caught four speckled trout, which he carried in his pocket. About 5:30 p.m., at Stone Creek, George decided to fish some more. The others remained in the car while he walked a short distance along the bank of the stream.

A little while later George’s brother, Mark, and Billy Rhindress decided either to also try fishing or to look for George. Richard Rhindress, the oldest boy in the group, decided to stay behind and catch up on sleep. At about 6:30 p.m. Richard woke up and wondered where his companions were. He shouted and honked the horn, but there was no response. A bit later he drove around looking for them, thinking that perhaps they had come out elsewhere along the road.

Later on he returned to where he had last seen them and explored along the creek bank. Mike Cramond, a journalist who later investigated the incident, thought that Richard Rhindress could have been within one hundred feet of the bear and his dead companions.10 Finding no one, he returned to the car, drove home, and reported what had happened. A search party was soon organized. The subsequent discovery of the boys’ bodies and the killing of a 276- pound male black bear, which was positively linked to the deaths of the boys, allow the following interpretation of events: George Halfkenny, who had gone fishing alone and had four fish in his pocket, was probably the first to be killed.

He seemed to have been attacked from behind, probably while intent on fishing. Generally the woods were thick enough that a bear could have stalked close to George without the boy being aware of it. George may have put up a fight, because branches were found broken at the scene of the attack.

The bear dragged his victim away from the creek in a semicircle and stored the body about 55 yards upstream. A short while later Mark Halfkenny and Billy Rhindress had apparently proceeded about 110 yards up the stream when they either surprised the bear, which by now had dragged George across the creek, or were ambushed by the bear while they were hiking.

Distributed by NATIONAL BOOK NETWORK Copyright © 1985, 2002, 2018 by Stephen Herrero All rights reserved. Bears are complex, fascinating animals. As with people, this makes the specific behavior of a given bear, at a certain time, difficult to predict. In this book I distill a lot of experience, knowledge, and understanding regarding bears. By applying this understanding you should increase your margin of safety and enjoyment in bear country. You will find out how unlikely injury is.

Even if you act as I suggest, however, I can’t guarantee a bear won’t injure you. 1kitap1.com/en CONTENTS Foreword by Paul Schullery Introduction to the 2018 Revised Edition Introduction 1.
