A swarm of punches from Renzo forced Sakuraba into the corner, before drawing Sakuraba into a guard pull to the ground.

The two then stood back up and a further flurry from Renzo led to him losing his balance. Sakuraba was to once again start raining down leg kicks on a clearly concerned Renzo, who rapidly got back to his feet to avoid the trap of laying down on the mat, completely prone to attack, that Belfort, Royce and Royler had fallen into. Furious standing exchanges were to follow, with Renzo landing some of the more telling blows but Sakuraba kept holding his own well, especially for someone who claimed to not train striking techniques regularly.

After a few minutes of clinching next to the ropes, where both men could be accused of stalling somewhat, the round finished with little of note happening aside from Renzo getting the better of what few volleys there were, with Sakuraba even faking a few Mongolian chops, a hokey move familiar to the crowd from professional wrestling. Round two began with an outstanding low takedown from Sakuraba as Renzo attempted to rush him. A few attempted guard passes from Sakuraba lead to a closed guard from Renzo where he was able to control Sakuraba, before he escaped and returned to landing leg kicks.

Renzo again got to his feet and was able to land some solid knees and punches. The pivotal moment came when Sakuraba was able to take Renzo down again, before turning away at a slight angle, allowing the Brazilian to get to his feet and grab a waist lock. Just as he had done against Royce, Sakuraba seemed to almost allow his back to be taken, in order to facilitate what is probably now the most famous kimura in all of MMA history.

Most of us can probably recall the fights we have been in throughout our lives. We can know how old we were, what sort of shape we were in and where they took place. What started them. An angry word. A random encounter on the street. Who the instigator was. But more than the details, we can probably recall how we felt even more clearly.

The sweat. The blood pumping faster through veins. Balling up fingers into fists. We can also recall how things were during those fights. The seconds passing like minutes, the desperate scrabble for every last advantage, the leap in your heart as the realisation kicked in that defeat or victory was close. How the chest heaved up and down as lungs gasped for air. How muscles ached, crying out in pain. It is harder to imagine it wasn’t mere seconds we were fighting for but an hour and a half, against an opponent as skilled and as driven as we were.

Harder to imagine having a crowd of tens of thousands urging us on as we defended not just our own name, family and reputation, but that of countless other fighters who had come before us. As fans of Mixed martial arts, it is much easier to think instead of the fights we watch. If you think about the last few Mixed martial arts fights you have seen, how many of them truly surprised you?

Every now and again there are spectacular knockouts or, increasingly rarely nowadays, highly technical submissions, but the universal rule set has now meant predictability and uniformity is the norm. Fights begin and end in the same way, with some dramatics at the weigh-ins or staredowns substituting in for the chaotic drama that first made MMA such a spectacle.

The elimination of David and Goliath type mismatches or interminably long fights is undoubtedly a welcome development, as it has allowed MMA to grow as a sport, become a viable commercial product and, at least notionally, protect fighters more. But there was a time when fighters had their will tested through endurance, rather than taking or dishing out sudden bursts of explosive damage.

Particularly at the beginning of the 20th century, fights in both wrestling and boxing could last hours and involve inhuman amounts of punishment. There are very few humans in history who have gone through such an experience, and they have become even fewer and fewer as time has gone on. The desires of spectators, the need to generate profits at the box office and the obvious bodily risk to fighters has curtailed the opportunities down to close to zero, with few people willing to take part in such brutality and not many willing to see it either.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
