The story goes that she spun off the road and skidded into a wall somewhere out in the sticks. She wasn\u2019t badly hurt and she just stayed there and waited for someone to come along. A police officer attended the scene but when the report was filed it stated the driver was sober and must have skidded on a wet patch in the road.\u2019 \u2018He covered it up?\u2019 \u2018That has always been the rumour, because back then Mrs Jarvis was rarely sober.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Bloody hell,\u2019 said Tom, \u2018he\u2019s probably Chief Constable by now.\u2019 \u2018Whoever it was,\u2019 she said, \u2018he recognised Jarvis was the coming man and decided it would be sensible to help him out of a big mess.\u2019 \u2018I keep hearing how incorruptible Jarvis is. I was beginning to believe it and you managed to dispel that myth in about five minutes.\u2019 \u2018More like an hour and a half \u2013 and I wouldn\u2019t say it made him corrupt necessarily.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018What would you call it then?\u2019 \u2018It\u2019s not the same as taking backhanders, is it? He was protecting his wife from arrest and possibly prison. Wouldn\u2019t you do that?\u2019 \u2018Possibly,\u2019 conceded Tom, \u2018but I have no intention of standing for public office.\u2019 \u2018Brian Hilton said that was one of the problems of our system,\u2019 she replied. \u2018He reckons we expect politicians to be morally superior to everyone else but they are just the same as the rest of us.\u2019 \u2018In my experience they are a lot worse.\u2019 \u2018Anyway, whatever happened, it must have shaken them both.<\/p>\n

He dropped out of the running for the safe seat and eventually became leader of the city council. There were no more rumours about affairs and Mrs Jarvis kept the drinking under control, at least in public. Their marriage has been rock solid since then, apparently. Where are we going by the way?\u2019 she asked him. \u2018I\u2019m off to meet Ian Bradshaw. I know the one thing you truly understand is human frailty, Tom. I\u2019ve had to account for my actions and I\u2019ve paid a very heavy penalty for my misdeeds but I can assure you I never killed anyone. Did you believe the poison that drips from the pens of those so-called reporters?<\/p>\n

They\u2019re not interested in the truth, none of them. They spend their lives wading through other people\u2019s trash looking for dirt, turning over rocks to see what crawls out. And they have the nerve to call me names. The Lady-killer. What chance did they give me? Please see me. I\u2019d visit you but clearly they won\u2019t allow that. If we were to meet face to face, I\u2019m certain I could convince you I am not the man they say I am. If you can look me in the eye and actually believe I am capable of such savagery, then I promise I won\u2019t blame you for leaving me here.<\/p>\n

I think you are a truth-seeker, Tom, but you don\u2019t seem to be at all interested in my truth. That\u2019s disappointing. You are my last and only chance, Tom Carney.
