While traces of that “Halloween goblin” of the comics remained, the costume itself began evolving into a supersoldier suit built at Osborn’s company, the perfect complement to the military glider. “At a certain point there was the realization that a clean direc- tion for the Goblin would be that the suit fit with the glider, poten- tially made by the same company,” Manser recalled. “This manu- factured look means there’s potentially less chaos in him, since it’s built by a corporation, not a crazy person.

It’s not a maniacally crazy, Halloween idea of him running around and scaring people, but the insanity of it is him using this power! It gave the Goblin a different edge.” But while the supersoldier suit and glider went together, there was a piece that didn’t fit—the mask. Gillis and Woodruff were working under James Acheson to develop a mask during a time when it was all “a blank page,” as Tom Woodruff, Jr., recalled.

They proposed doing a mask that would actually emulate the facial-changing dynamics of the rubber pullover comic-book mask, but the director and producers were uncer- ffYl Fl «5 Hm n F” 4«oi’f; GoW/n mos/c sculpture, front and side profile, prepared by Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. Then Gillis and Woodruff suggested an articulated prosthetic makeup, and-Raimi gave his blessing for the company to work up a test. The result was a prosthetic appliance makeup using silicone, as opposed to more traditional foam latex, which would allow an actor to freely work the makeup, while an exaggerated, articulated brow could be manipulated via radio control receivers hidden in the character's peaked cowl. But to their disappointment, the production opted for a more static look.

“Sam’s concern was that if we saw Norman Osborn putting on a rubber mask, how we’d justify it being able to change expressions,” Woodruff recalled. “Was it a new, lifelike material or some kind of hybrid synthetic flesh? He decided that approach would require too much back story.”

Inc., New York, and simultaneously in Canada by Random House of Canada Limited, Toronto.
