The good news is that the Archangel Michael and the other good angels defeated the devil (also called Lucifer or “light bearer” since he was one of the highest angels) and the rest of the bad angels who had rejected God.

The bad news is that those fallen angels were thrown down to earth, where to this day they have a vested interest in ruining the plans of God for humankind. As we hear a few verses later, after his failure to corrupt or sidetrack Mary in any way, “Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 12:17).

This is why we must know and appreciate the angels nearest to us, the guardian angels. In the bold and reassuring words of St. John Bosco, “When tempted, invoke your Angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: he trembles and flees at the sight of your Guardian Angel.”1 Our guardian angels—in company with all the angels of every hierarchy —constantly see the face of God. We know this from the advice of Our Lord: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones.

For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). St. Thomas teaches us that every babe in the womb is watched over by his mother’s guardian angel, but at birth, God sends each person his own angel to guide, enlighten, and protect him until death. All the angels came into existence at once at the beginning of creation, as St. Augustine explains, when God said,“ ‘ Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3).

Since each person throughout all of human history has a unique angel as his guardian, we know there are at least as many angels as people who have ever existed and will ever exist—and that is only to count the minimum number in one of the nine choirs of angels! For most of us, our angels remain invisible guides who constantly protect and inspire us, but without much gratitude or acknowledgment on our part.

Excerpts from the English translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, © 1994, 1997, 2000 by Libreria Editrice Vaticana—United States Catholic Conference, Washington, D.C. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc used to argue about whether it was better to be a convert, one who had chosen the Faith and could deeply appreciate it after years without the life-giving water and fullness of Truth, or to be a cradle Catholic who had the advantage of loving the Good, the True, and the Beautiful from infancy. Happily, many in our day have the blessing of both experiences.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
