A commotion broke out several stories above them before heavy footfalls clamored after them. Another muffled pop sounded before a bullet rebounded through the fire escape like a deadly game of pinball. Jay wasn’t sure which of the goons was chasing after them, but he heard Goatee shout to his cohort from the hotel room above.

“Are you fucking stupid? You might hit the girl. Go after them!” Still ahead of him, Gia was checking windows at each landing, desperate to seek shelter. After two more flights of stairs, she found one unlocked and threw it open before diving into the room. Jay followed her lead and locked the window shut behind him. The two friends tore through the unoccupied room and burst into the 1920s-inspired hallway, where one of the two elevator cars was miraculously empty and waiting for them.

They sprinted into the glass carriage, and Gia pounded the lobby button as the duo waited impatiently for the doors to close. In the distance, a window shattered, followed by Mustache crashing into the hallway. He darted toward the elevators as Jay jabbed the “close door” button repeatedly at a frantic speed.

A few precious seconds ticked away before the doors at last began to slide shut at an unrushed pace, and Mustache increased his speed. The doors finally sealed shut, just as the grunt approached, and he pounded against them. “Now what?” Gia asked. Jay rubbed the back of his neck and steadied his breathing.

“We just go to the lobby and then make a break for the parking garage.” “You have your keys?” He pulled them out of his pocket and dangled them in front of Gia. “I never go anywhere without them. Not even the beach.” “Okay, good. Let’s hope that we don’t stop on the way down.” No sooner had Gia uttered the words than the elevator slowed its descent before coming to a complete stop with a pleasant chime.

Much to the friends’ dismay, the doors slid open and revealed an elderly couple struggling with their luggage.

© 2026 Rob Loveless Cover Art © 2026 Mandy Porto Published in February 2026 by NineStar Press, New Mexico, USA.
