But he\u2019d guess she stabbed him before he got off his shot\u2014in fact, he\u2019d bet his Cayman bank account on it. She shrugged. \u201cI do not know the police here. I am afraid of what they will think. I\u2060\u2014\u201d \u201cLeft the jewels behind.\u201d She waved a hand. \u201cThat is my goodwill gesture. Bellarine is\u2014was your thief. By the time Dane arrived with Angelique, it was nightfall and the sultry air was tolerable in the sea breeze. Once inside, they didn\u2019t get far before they met with the Gables and Tomkinses. Dane searched the room and found Shana, then introduced Angelique to the Gables. \u201cMs. Dubois is the investigator for the insurance company. We\u2019re working together on the recovery of all the stolen jewels.\u201d The party\u2019s host, Tomkins, said, \u201cI met Angel earlier in the week. We had a nice chat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you meet with Baylor Bellarine also? When was the last time you chatted with him?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t recall ever chatting with Bellarine. I only met him once. Long enough only for him to invite himself as my guest to the island parties. Seems he\u2019d heard of our soirees and wanted to sell some art work or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tomkins shrugged. \u201cNothing to be done about it now.\u201d Dane figured he was telling the truth. He\u2019d been conned. And he didn\u2019t mind so much because he hadn\u2019t been one of the burglary victims. Gable said, \u201cWhere\u2019s Shana?\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s here.\u201d Dane nodded in her direction.<\/p>\n
