Mrs Bennet was looking about for a fresh ear for her tale when all attention suddenly turned towards the door. The Netherfield party had arrived. Mr Bingley entered first, followed by two elegant young ladies whose gowns shimmered in the candlelight.

Behind them came another gentleman who looked fashionable but not particularly pleasant, and last of all Mr Darcy, tall, his posture impressive, his expression one of unassailable composure. Every eye in the room followed them. Every fan fluttered a little faster. Mrs Bennet gave a small, triumphant gasp. “There! Did I not say they would come? Look at them — such distinction! Jane, my love, stand up straight.

Smile. He must see you at once.” Elizabeth watched as Mr Bingley’s eyes roved the room with evident pleasure, bowing and nodding to all. Mr Darcy, by contrast, surveyed the assembly as though calculating the precise degree of inconvenience it represented. His gaze passed over the Bennets — though it lingered, very briefly, on Elizabeth — and moved about, then returned to Mr Bennet, to whom he bowed slightly.

Mr Bingley and his friend both stepped forwards, but his sisters remained in a corner, while the other gentleman immediately grabbed a drink. Mrs Bennet was already advancing, dragging Jane forwards like a prize exhibit. “Mr Bingley! How delighted we are to see you. And Mr Darcy, of course.

We have been telling everyone about your gallantry yesterday. The whole neighbourhood is in raptures!” Mr Bingley laughed, easy and warm. “Pray do not make us out to be heroes, ma’am. We were only too glad to be of service.” Mr Darcy inclined his head in silence, clearly uncomfortable with the loud outburst. His eyes found Elizabeth briefly, then he greeted Mr Bennet.

“Mr Darcy, I am honoured to see you again,” Mr Bennet said. “A pleasure to see you, sir. And your family, of course,” Mr Darcy said, and Elizabeth was surprised to find his eyes upon her again. Against every better instinct, she smiled, but he looked more uneasy instead of returning the smile, sending a wave of discomfort through her — and the evening had only just begun. Just then, the music swelled, and pairs began to form lines for the first dance.

The sets began in earnest, and the room spun with colour and laughter. Mr Bingley immediately solicited Jane’s hand, much to Mrs Bennet’s satisfaction.

The characters and events portrayed in this book are fictitious. Oh, my dears — Netherfield Park is let at last! Where is Mr Bennet? Where is Hill? Hill, bring me some tea and come and listen. You are part of the family, and you deserve to know!” “Papa is in the library,” Elizabeth answered. “Should I fetch him?”

“Yes, yes, go and fetch him at once. It is a matter of great importance.” While Elizabeth quit the room, Hill entered, and they exchanged amused glances; Mrs Bennet’s outbursts were only too well known to both. Mr Bennet was in the library, and at Elizabeth’s entrance, he gave her a wry smile. “Had somebody died?” he asked, and Elizabeth laughed.

“Quite the opposite, Papa. Apparently, Netherfield Park has been let.” “Has it? And why should I care enough to interrupt my book?” “I am not sure, but Mama is certain it is a matter of great significance. So please come with me.” With another wry look, Mr Bennet followed his daughter to join the rest of the family. “Mr Bennet! So good you are here! I have just returned from Meryton.

My sister Phillips has been to visit Mrs Long, who heard it direct from Lady Lucas, who had it from Sir William. Netherfield Park has been let at last by a single gentleman in possession of a good fortune! What a wonderful thing for your daughters!” Mrs Bennet sank into a chair, fanning herself with a handkerchief as though the news had raised the temperature of the room by ten degrees. “Is it? How come?” Mr Bennet asked calmly. “Oh, stop teasing me, Mr Bennet!

You know that I hope he will marry one of our daughters! And why not? They are the prettiest girls around, especially Jane, who is a perfect beauty, and Lydia is so lively and vivacious!
