He nodded with a serene expression before shuffling meekly away. \u2018You\u2019re a wizard,\u2019 Lacy breathed as Chan closed the window and clapped their hands together. Chan laughed. \u2018Plenty of practice dealing with upset customers, that\u2019s all.\u2019 \u2018Why doesn\u2019t he move to a different caravan?\u2019 Lacy asked, peering out of the window to watch Gary trudge back towards his grotty caravan.<\/p>\n

\u2018Then he wouldn\u2019t have to worry about any of this.\u2019 Chan collapsed onto the bed beside Marc and shrugged. \u2018We all have our idiosyncrasies.\u2019 Lacy looked at Chan in surprise. They looked like someone who would enjoy getting into a scrap on a night out, but here they were, throwing around words like \u2018idiosyncrasies\u2019. \u2018Doesn\u2019t it freak you out?\u2019 Lacy pushed, watching Gary walk away until she was sure he\u2019d definitely gone. \u2018That there are people like Gary, right there\u2026people who could get into the dorms if they really wanted to?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Ah, Gary\u2019s harmless,\u2019 Marc insisted as he emerged from inside his T- shirt. \u2018But what if\u2026?\u2019 Lacy chewed the inside of her lip. \u2018What if something happens again, like it did ten years ago? What\u2019s to stop someone coming in here and\u2014\u2019 \u2018Wha\u2014\u2019 Marc began, before Chan abruptly cut him off. \u2018Lacy, don\u2019t worry about it, honestly.\u2019<\/p>\n

They stood and placed a comforting hand on Lacy\u2019s shoulder. \u2018I know what it\u2019s like, being somewhere like this \u2013 it\u2019s intense, claustrophobic. Your imagination can start running away with you a bit.\u2019 Lacy flushed, remembering Chan\u2019s concerned face the evening she\u2019d freaked out on the beach. \u2018I worked in Blackpool for the Christmas season and, trust me, that was much worse than here.<\/p>\n

You had to perform for customers all day. Pretend to be this happy, smiley person, when really you were sick of the sight of them, and everything was shit.\u2019 Marc nodded viciously and Lacy wondered if it was really so bad working here. But then again, her job involved staring at the water with a hot lifeguard all day. She might not feel the same if she was dealing with angry drunks or dancing around dressed as a bear.<\/p>\n

\u2018In Blackpool we had people just not turning up for work because they couldn\u2019t hack it anymore,\u2019 Chan continued. \u2018Like Ceri?\u2019 Lacy said quickly, hoping for some intel on why she might have fled. \u2018Yeah.\u2019 Chan nodded thoughtfully but didn\u2019t offer anything further. \u2018Andy said she was close with Dylan,\u2019 Lacy pressed, wincing at how obsessive she sounded. It was clear Dylan and Ceri had history, even if she hadn\u2019t been anywhere near the cliff last night.<\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t what bothered her.<\/p>\n
