I rose and retrieved the scrolls and the little black book from my purse. \u201cWe found these in a house the thief was targeting, and we\u2019re wondering if they make any sort of sense to you.\u201d \u201cIn other words,\u201d Lugh said, \u201ccan you please transcribe them.\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d Mathi said. \u201cThough I would suggest it be done here rather than at the museum, given we are unclear as to where Eljin\u2019s loyalties lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lugh rose, washed his hands, then carefully unrolled the first scroll, keeping his fingers to the edges to lessen the risk of contaminating the old vellum with skin oil. He studied it for several minutes, gaze narrowed and expression thoughtful. \u201cIt appears to be based on hieroglyphs, with a few other random ancient languages thrown in.\u201d<\/p>\n

He let the scroll roll back up and opened up the black book. \u201cAnd this contains the means of deciphering them. Handy.\u201d \u201cHow long will it take you?\u201d I asked. \u201cA couple of days, most likely. Glyphs can be tricky even at the best of times.\u201d He glanced up. \u201cAnd if I\u2019m honest, tracking down the truth about both the article Eljin and ours is more of a priority right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

On that we both agreed. I glanced at the clock and saw it was close to ten. \u201cI should go. I promised Ingrid I\u2019d help her close again tonight.\u201d Darby cleared her throat and gave me a pointed stare. \u201cAren\u2019t you forgetting something?\u201d \u201cOh, yeah.\u201d I waved a hand. \u201cI had another dream. Apparently we\u2019re on the clock and this godly game will be over in nine months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s always good to have a timeframe to work with,\u201d Lugh said. \u201cBut I\u2019m thinking the result is not currently guaranteed to go our way.\u201d \u201cNo, but we now have Beira and my father on our side, so that\u2019s got to swing things a little in our favor.\u201d \u201cWhen it comes to gods, nothing is ever guaranteed.\u201d Mathi\u2019s phone pinged.<\/p>\n

His face was lean, and his skin almost translucent. He was certainly a handsome man\u2014not elven perfect, perhaps, but damn close to it. Except he wasn\u2019t a man. He was a god of thunder and lightning. One who had been bound to Earth in the form of a curmudgeon\u2014the male version of a hag. Unlike their female counterparts, however, curmudgeons were able to shift into a more pleasing countenance, and I couldn\u2019t help but wonder if this was the form he\u2019d used when he\u2019d seduced my mother and begat me.<\/p>\n

For several minutes, neither of us moved. He simply studied me, his gaze scanning my length, as if searching for something. When his eyes finally rose to mine again, a flicker of… not so much disappointment, though that was definitely there, but rather annoyance, ran through them. \u201cYou know,\u201d I said, never one to keep quiet even when that was probably the best option, \u201cif you\u2019re disappointed in how I turned out, you\u2019ve only yourself to blame.\u201d Amusement lurked briefly in his expression then fell away.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how do you come to that conclusion?\u201d His voice was filled with gravitas and warmth and resonated through every inch of my being, oddly connecting with something deep within. What that something was, I couldn\u2019t say, but I wasn\u2019t sure I liked the sensation. \u201cWell,\u201d I said evenly, despite the belated stirring of trepidation, \u201caside from the initial few minutes of involvement at my conception, you\u2019ve basically had nothing to do with me in my sixty-odd years of existence.\u201d<\/p>\n
