He and Mahmoud had removed their shoes by the door at her request, both awkwardly bumping shoulders and exchanging glances as they did. Zayn could understand why she\u2019d want them only in socks, since the carpet in this space was an elaborate piece of art.<\/p>\n

It was clearly hand woven, a one- of-a-kind Persian masterpiece, and from what he could make out in the dim light, its reds, golds, and greens told a story. Laleh had retreated to the bay window on the other side of the room, light from the streetlamps filtering in to illuminate her form. Her knees were drawn to her chest, a faded pashmina pulled tightly around her shoulders as if to ward off a nonexistent chill.<\/p>\n

It was, without a doubt, the most closed off he\u2019d ever seen her. \u201cI said you could come in, Zayn,\u201d Laleh murmured, but her gaze never left the window. \u201cNot him.\u201d Zayn had seen the displeasure on her face the moment he\u2019d beckoned for Mahmoud to enter with him, but this was how it had to be.<\/p>\n

This time he was going to do it right. \u201cI can\u2019t be alone with you, Laleh,\u201d he tried to reason, hoping that even in her distrustful state she\u2019d understand. \u201cYou know that.\u201d \u201cDo I?\u201d Her words were empty, the passion and playfulness Zayn was used to hearing completely gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I distinctly remember us having been alone a few times before.\u201d \u201cI know.\u201d Zayn sighed, ashamed of his past actions. \u201cI know, and that was wrong of me. We should have had someone else with us, preferably Khalid.\u201d He looked at Mahmoud, their makeshift chaperone this time around. \u201cAlthough I guess Mahmoud will do in this case. Are you mahram?\u201d Mahmoud grunted, something Zayn was quickly learning was the man\u2019s favorite form of communication.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am close enough.\u201d That certainly wasn\u2019t encouraging. Zayn made to ask more about their relation to each other, but Laleh spoke first.<\/p>\n
