That\u2019s interesting.\u201d Gwen groaned off camera. He cast a worried glance at her bed. \u201cShe wanted to do it all natural,\u201d Tom said, lowering his voice. \u201cNo pain meds. I think she\u2019s starting to regret that now.\u201d Elle winced in sympathy. Bo said, \u201cWe forwarded details of the deal to your accounting bot.\u201d \u201cYeah, yeah. Mark says it\u2019s a bad deal for us. They\u2019re taking us for a ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen groaned again, and Tom said, \u201cI\u2019m almost done, sweetheart!\u201d \u201cSo, I take it we should decline?\u201d Turning back to the station, Tom refocused on his employees. \u201cNo, sometimes there\u2019s a cost-benefit the bean counters can\u2019t measure. I think this is one of them. We need to fix the ship, and this is likely the fastest way to do it. And if they get the better end of the bargain, maybe they\u2019ll remember that the next time we need them for something.<\/p>\n

It never hurts to have friends out there. Plus, if what I\u2019ve heard about the Tinkers Guild is any indication, they\u2019ve got very long memories. We can afford it. We need it. I say go for it.\u201d Gwendolyn screamed again in pain. \u201cGet over here, you filthy lying son of a . . .\u201d \u201cOops! Gotta go! Bye!\u201d The connection ended abruptly, and Tom\u2019s holo winked out of sight, along with all the sights and sounds from a delivery room so many light-years away.<\/p>\n

Bo and Elle shared a glance again. He smiled at her. \u201cWell, at least we have our answer.\u201d \u201cI think that man\u2019s a workaholic or something.\u201d Bo opened the door for her, and together they walked back out onto the concourse. \u201cIs it just me, or is this place getting crowded all of a sudden?\u201d<\/p>\n

Elle said as they headed for the old docks. \u201cAnother ferry came in and dropped off a bunch of guys. Two are leaving soon, though, and they\u2019ll likely take a bunch of people with them. So, our population level will drop off again. For a little while, at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

She came in hard with a stream of atmospheric gas trailing from a rupture in her hull. The port had been programmed in by hand, and the coordinates were entered into the ship\u2019s computer some time ago, so they were not entirely accurate. Southern Sojourner popped into existence in the Zephyrus solar system less than a quarter astronomical unit from Aramis Station.<\/p>\n

Her opponent, Red Meteor, popped in behind her less than a second later. An old Republican Hawk-class, the Meteor had been sold off as surplus by the Navy a decade ago, stripped of her weaponry. Renamed and re-outfitted with black market guns, she eventually ended up on the frontier, a fate befalling several old warships. Now that Red Meteor had her prey in sight, her massive forward cannons burst into light. The vacuum of space muzzled the roar of explosive energy aimed at Sojourner.<\/p>\n

But the light display brightened the hulls of both ships. The first giant bolt missed, streaking past its intended target and into the void.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
