Each had golden hair and sharp, angular features. They wore robes of gold and had small books in front of them that they occasionally glanced to while speaking. Then, one of them finally said something that Jonathan understood. Amidst the jumble of incoherent syllables and strange sounds, one of them said the word \u201cLarkyn,\u201d and pointed directly at the drow. Jonathan spun around to see the drow, who he now understood was Larkyn, and watched as he hung his head low. Jonathan turned back to the three elves and saw one of them pull something from inside a wooden box.<\/p>\n

His eyes shot wide when he saw the very same amulet the troll king had worn. \u201cNo,\u201d Jonathan said. \u201cNebenuk said that was hidden away a long time ago. How could Larkyn have found it? And if he had, how did he lose it?\u201d Jonathan turned around and walked toward the image of Larkyn. \u201cWhat happened, did you give it to the troll king? Is that it? But now you want it back?\u201d<\/p>\n

Suddenly, one of the other elves rose from behind the table and spoke in a deafening voice. He spoke the name, \u201cLarkyn,\u201d several times and then he sat back down. Only then did Jonathan notice the onyx sphere sitting upon the table. No sooner had he looked upon it, then he was dismissed from the vision and standing back in the archives where he had been moments before. The onyx gently lowered to rest in the bowl and there was neither light nor sound coming from it anymore.<\/p>\n

Jonathan reached for the stone and turned it over in his hands. Perhaps Ruben would be able to make more sense of it than he was. Maybe that was why Ziegler had wanted Ruben along in the first place. Jonathan went to put the stone in his pocket, but it was too large. He could smell the stale, bitter odor of the magical bolt as it ripped through the air and nearly blinded him with its blue flash. The pine tree that took the brunt of the lightning exploded ten yards away. The top end of the tree crashed through the forest while the twenty-foot-tall stub was left smoldering in place. The wizard knew he had been lucky, but now his ward spell was consumed. He needed to find cover if he was going to live long enough to put up another defensive barrier around himself.<\/p>\n

Raven leapt around the jagged boulder and slammed his back up against the cold, pointed surface, bits of stone digging into his flesh as he gasped for air. Another searing flash of blue light erupted around him and a pine tree splintered and cracked, showering the area in bits of light-colored wood just moments before crashing down to the ground where Raven had just been.<\/p>\n

The wizard threw up a ward, but not quickly enough to stop a mess of pine needles from scraping his right cheek. He winced and pulled away.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
