I\u2019ve got a killer headache, and almost everyone I\u2019ve met is dead.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I arched an eyebrow. \u201cI dunno. You\u2019re pretty pale.\u201d \u201cI work nights!\u201d \u201cUh huh. This town has been fucking with me hard ever since I rolled in here. How do I know you\u2019re not just a vampire or something?\u201d He stared at me like I was crazy, which, on second thought, maybe I was. \u201cPlease. If I was a vampire, I\u2019d just charm you into liking me, no pick- up lines needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wrinkled my nose. He had a point. \u201cFine. But how do I know I can trust you?\u201d \u201cI guess you don\u2019t. But I\u2019ll tell you one thing. You can\u2019t trust them,\u201d he said, giving me a hard look. \u201cTrust who?\u201d \u201cThe Barbs.\u201d I blinked. \u201cBarbs, plural? But not the dead one downstairs, right?\u201d He chuckled. \u201cNot the one downstairs. They seem to stay away from her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long have you been here?\u201d He fixed me with another hard stare. \u201cToo long. I lost track. The days all blur together after a while. If you don\u2019t mind\u2026what year was it when you\u2026\u201d His voice trailed off. \u201cIt\u2019s 2024,\u201d I said. \u201cOctober\u2026well, eleven now, 2024.\u201d \u201cSo I\u2019ve been here for about six months\u2026\u201d \u201cSix months? Why don\u2019t you just leave?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s\u2026complicated. How much do you know about this place?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, not much. My car ran out of gas right in front of the gas station last night. I\u2019ve been wandering around trying to figure this place out. I really have to get home. My dad\u2019s dying, and\u2060\u2014\u201d \u201cLast night?\u201d<\/p>\n

I crept along the freshly chip-n-sealed country road at a snail\u2019s pace, with my dad\u2019s advice in my brain on repeat, warning me not to drive too fast in the dark. Something about deer and cornfields. Hitting one of them\u2014either deer or cornfield\u2014was not something I wanted to experience. My sister had called me the day before (I let it go to voicemail, of course, because I hate her) to tell me that if I was going to come back home, then now would be the time since Dad had little of it left.<\/p>\n

The news wasn\u2019t a surprise, since we all knew he was losing his battle with leukemia, and I\u2019d made peace with it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
