It\u2019s a basic spare bedroom with a bed and dresser. Nothing exciting. I\u2019m using the third and fourth bedrooms as storage, so they have boxes and a couple of bookcases. The bathroom door is open, so she peeks in there. \u201cYou\u2019re tidy,\u201d she says. That makes me chuckle. Shrugging, I grab her hand on impulse and lead her to the staircase up to the former lantern room. \u201cOhhhhh\u2026you just hide it all up here,\u201d she says, looking at my desk and drafting table, the bookcases overflowing with sketchbooks, textbooks, and piles of paper.<\/p>\n

Her brow furrows adorably as she glances around. \u201cWhere\u2019s the lantern?\u201d \u201cThis was never an official lighthouse. No Fresnel lens. My ancestors would use oil lamps and light codes to communicate and guide the ships when necessary. The point was to be unnoticed. It still is.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful house. I did the lighthouse challenge recently, and this would be cool to have as a part of it. It would be a wonderful park.\u201d A chill races down my spine. \u201cNo, absolutely not. No one knows this is here unless they see it from the water.<\/p>\n

They know to stay away. I treasure my privacy.\u201d She lays her hand on my arm and gives a light squeeze. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, Cam\u2014 Is it okay if I call you that?\u201d I nod. She gives a quick grin. \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell anyone.\u201d \u201cViolet, I\u2019m serious. I don\u2019t want you to post about your painting or tell anyone about the place. I don\u2019t want people here.\u201d My voice sounds harsh even to my own ears, but it\u2019s vital she understands this.<\/p>\n

She pulls her hand away and crosses her arms over her chest. I feel the loss of her warmth. \u201cI get it. This is a special place, having people here would ruin it. Remember, I\u2019m a Bigfoot shifter\u2014not getting noticed is in my DNA.\u201d How could she not be the center of attention no matter what form she\u2019s in? I know she attracts my attention like a magnet to the refrigerator door.<\/p>\n

The room darkens when the afternoon sun goes behind a cloud, and Violet starts. She looks out the front-facing window toward the water, and then out the rear window to the woods. \u201cIt\u2019s getting late.\u201d She turns toward the stairs. \u201cI should head out.\u201d I follow her down the stairs, unsure what the rush is.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that late. You\u2019re welcome to stay. I could make dinner.\u201d She shakes her head as she continues to the ground floor. \u201cThanks, but I gotta get home.\u201d There\u2019s tension rolling off her, and I don\u2019t know why. Then it hits me. The woods. Princess joins us and stands next to me, nosing my hand and inviting a pet, which I gladly oblige. \u201cWill you come back?\u201d I ask, hoping the desperation I\u2019m feeling isn\u2019t evident in my voice.<\/p>\n

Being an art teacher is not what I dreamed of when I was sitting in my university art classes. Teagan Penhall, owner of the local shifter professional hockey team my brother Ollie plays for, hired me to paint a watercolor of a lighthouse on her family\u2019s land as a birthday gift for her uncle. It\u2019s not a lighthouse that was sanctioned by the Coast Guard\u2014it\u2019s something her family built to help them with some possibly illicit activities way back in the day.<\/p>\n
