And it had, you know, many, many thousands of people who kind of dreamed of this.68 Interviewees had differing views on how to classify their careers in a primarily tabletop game after Wizards had embraced the esports paradigm in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Rapha\u00ebl L\u00e9vy identified esports as a recent \u201cbranding\u201d move for Magic rather than \u00adself-identifying as an esports player; Jon Finkel described a qualified distinction between tabletop Magic and esports: I think the problem with Magic is that it was a really, really good tabletop game, and it\u2019s just sort of, like, an okay electronic game. Obviously the old Magic Pro Tour by definition if we\u2019re calling \u201cesport\u201d an \u201celectronic sport,\u201d it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>But I think, sort of, thematically and in terms of what it was getting at, it was very, very similar. And if they\u2019d chosen a slightly different term than esport, you know, it\u2019d probably be an easy \u201cyes.\u201d But as it is, maybe it was like a \u00adproto-esport or something else.69 As with Finkel, L\u00e9vy, and \u00adScott-Vargas, no interviewee painted competitive Magic as an esport without qualification.
