\u201cNo. I was just\u2014\u201d I stop myself. Swallow. \u201cNever mind.\u201d He follows my gaze. I expect a raised brow. For him to clear his throat or remind me of our tight schedule. He does neither, just waits for me to be done. I nod, and we walk back to his truck.<\/p>\n

Again, like all of the times before, he helps me up into the vehicle. His firm grip is warm on my hips, a reminder that I\u2019m wearing leggings today and the fabric is thin. \u201cI\u2019ll be right back,\u201d he says. \u201cWait here.\u201d Before I can ask any questions, he\u2019s already jogged back over and re- entered the gas station.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, he comes back out, a small white bag swinging from his hand. He holds it out to me. \u201cHere.\u201d Inside are two pairs of flip-flops. I pull out the cherry ones first. They\u2019re completely ridiculous. The dual cherries hang from stems and decorate the entire insole of the foam. Then there\u2019s a pair of plastic cherries stuck to the top of the strap that crosses over the foot.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re so cute, and just looking at them makes me smile. \u201cThank you. I love them!\u201d My throat tightens. \u201cYou didn\u2019t have to\u2060\u2014\u201d \u201cI know,\u201d he says. \u201cBut you wanted them.\u201d He starts the truck and pulls back onto the interstate. I stare at him. \u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d \u201cYou didn\u2019t need to.\u201d There\u2019s no judgment in his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery girl needs a pair of flip-flops.\u201d I pull out the second pair. The flamingos. He shrugs. \u201cOr two. What can I say, I like flamingos.\u201d My eyes sting. \u201cThank you, Mitchell. Truly. That was incredibly thoughtful.\u201d \u201cEvie, they\u2019re six-dollar flip-flops,\u201d he says. \u201cStill thoughtful.\u201d I sniff. Wait, did he call me Evie? I slip off my shoes before I can overthink it and slip on the flamingo flip-flops.<\/p>\n

The bright pink looks even brighter against the pale skin of my feet. \u201cI should buy some nail polish so my toes look cute enough for these shoes.\u201d He nods. \u201cWe can get that at the next stop. We can also get some hair dye if you want. I\u2019m not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I can read instructions.\u201d Giddiness bubbles inside me. \u201cYes! I definitely want to do that!\u201d<\/p>\n

I look down at my feet, wiggle my toes. \u201cI would definitely not be allowed to wear these.\u201d His mouth tilts. \u201cGood thing no one\u2019s here to stop you.\u201d For a second, the world feels very small. Just the two of us.<\/p>\n
