Just remember, she\u2019s probably still very upset.\u2019 Nodding at him, she led the way up to the front door to ring the bell. Hearing the sound of approaching footsteps, they glanced around at each other before pulling out their respective IDs. \u2018Mrs Lowe?\u2019 Vicky enquired, holding hers up to the shrivelled, almost unrecognisable face of the woman peering out at them.<\/p>\n

\u2018DI Gilbert, and my colleague, DCI Tanner. We met briefly the other day at your husband\u2019s house.\u2019 \u2018Do you have any news?\u2019 she suddenly demanded. \u2018If you\u2019re asking if we\u2019ve found who hurt your daughter, I\u2019m afraid we haven\u2019t \u2013 at least not yet.\u2019 \u2018You\u2019re not here to tell me that you made a mistake?\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m sorry,\u2019 Vicky replied with a sorrowful frown.<\/p>\n

\u2018As I think my colleague mentioned before, our medical examiner has been able to positively identify her.\u2019 \u2018Yes, of course,\u2019 came the woman\u2019s quiet reply, her bloodshot eyes drifting to the ground. \u2018I just thought there might have been a mix-up \u2013 and that she\u2019d been found staying at a friend\u2019s house.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m sorry again,\u2019 Vicky repeated, unsure what else to say. Wiping away an escaping tear, Mrs Lowe lifted her head to offer them both a faltering smile.<\/p>\n

\u2018Would you like to come in?\u2019 she asked, glancing a little awkwardly behind her. \u2018I\u2019ve only just put the kettle on.\u2019 Vicky looked briefly at Tanner before saying, \u2018If you don\u2019t mind?\u2019 \u2018Not at all,\u2019 Mrs Lowe replied. \u2018To be honest, I could do with the company.\u2019 Following her through to a small, cluttered kitchen, with a tortoiseshell cat staring curiously at them from on top of a wooden table, Mrs Lowe shooed it gently off before moving to the kettle.<\/p>\n

Switching it on, she began fishing items out of the cupboards. \u2018Tea or coffee?\u2019 Viewing the own-brand jar of instant coffee she\u2019d just pulled out with wary suspicion, Tanner closed the kitchen door before replying, \u2018I\u2019d rather not, thank you,\u2019 only for Vicky to jab him sharply in the arm before shooting him an admonishing glare. \u2018But then again,\u2019 he quickly added, \u2018if it\u2019s not too much trouble, I\u2019d love a coffee.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019ll have one as well, thank you,\u2019 said Vicky, as the cat began curling itself around her leg.<\/p>\n

\u2018May I ask what your cat\u2019s called?\u2019 \u2018Her official name is Amber, but Sasha tends to use slightly more derogatory terms.\u2019 \u2018Sasha being your daughter,\u2019 Vicky continued, ambling towards a shelf crammed with decorative items and family photographs, \u2018the young woman we met the other day?\u2019<\/p>\n
