You’re welcome anywhere in the estate except the ritual chamber beneath the east wing, which is sealed, and Maren’s personal study, which is hers. Everything else is open to you.” “The Office requires that I be granted full access to — ” “Full access to the household and its operations. I read the terms. You can observe anything you want. I just told you where to find it.” I set her bag on the desk.

“If you need anything, ask Illara. She runs the household better than I do.” I left her there and walked down the hallway. The geometry tracked her as I went. She stood in the center of the room for a full minute, not moving. Then she walked to the window and looked out at the eastern view. Her heart rate was still elevated. But it had shifted. The spike from earlier — the anxiety of being left behind — had settled into something steadier.

Not calm. Not comfortable. But present. Attentive. The heartbeat of someone who was looking at something new and trying to decide what to make of it. Over the next several days, I watched Celene the way she was supposed to be watching me. She followed her training to the letter. She attended meals in the main hall, sitting at the far end of the table, eating sparingly, observing.

She walked the estate grounds at regular intervals, always the same route, always with her hands clasped and her expression composed. She visited the ward stones on the perimeter, studying them with a focused attention that told me she had some training in spiritual energy, enough to sense the spatial field even if she couldn’t manipulate it.

She wrote letters every evening. The geometry couldn’t read the words, but I could track the rhythm of her writing — the pauses, the hesitations, the moments where the pen stopped moving and she sat very still before continuing. The hesitations were getting longer. I didn’t avoid her.

Chapter 1: Dead Man’s Inheritance Chapter 2: What’s Left Chapter 3: The Way Out Chapter 4: Terms Chapter 5: The Faithful Chapter 6: Reach Chapter 7: First Impression Chapter 8: Alliance Chapter 9: Yield Chapter 10: Surrender Chapter 11: Foundation Chapter 12: Sacred Compliance Chapter 13: The Reader Chapter 14: The Advisor Chapter 15: The Deep East Chapter 16: Corruption Chapter 17: Witness Chapter 18: Evidence Chapter 19: The Oath Chapter 20: Return Chapter 21: Cracks Chapter 22: The Library Chapter 23: First Chapter 24: The Summons Chapter 25: Open Ground Chapter 26: Peer Chapter 27: The Table Chapter 28: Dominion Chapter 29: The Cost Chapter 30: Terms Chapter 31: Release Chapter 32: Return Chapter 33: Sovereign 1kitap1.com/en CHAPTER 1: DEAD MAN’S INHERITANCE The first thing I noticed was the taste.

Copper and ozone, like licking a battery while standing in a thunderstorm. The second thing I noticed was that I was naked, lying on cold stone, and surrounded by people in robes who were chanting in a language that didn’t exist on any continent I’d ever heard of. So. Not a great start. My name is Drew Hallas. I was twenty-six, employed, relatively healthy, and up until about thirty seconds ago, pretty sure I was asleep in my apartment after a twelve-hour shift.

Now I was here, wherever here was, and the robed crowd didn’t look like they’d brought me in for a job interview. The stone beneath me was carved with grooves. Channels, really, spiraling out from where I lay in concentric rings that pulsed with a light somewhere between violet and ultraviolet. The color itself felt wrong, like my eyes weren’t designed to process it. The light moved in rhythm with the chanting, and every pulse sent a vibration through my spine that made my teeth itch.

I tried to sit up. Couldn’t. My limbs were pinned by nothing visible, locked flat against the stone like someone had stapled my shadow to it. I could turn my head, though, and I used that freedom to get a better look at the situation. To my left, maybe four feet away, there was a second altar. This one held a body. Old man.

Dead. I was sure of it because nobody alive had that color, a grayish yellow, like a bruise on the underside of a pear. He was dressed in formal robes, dark fabric embroidered with silver thread, and his hands were folded over his chest in a way that looked arranged. Someone had closed his eyes. Someone had combed his thin white hair back from his face.

He’d been laid out with care, with reverence, and the same carved channels that ran beneath me extended under his altar too.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
