The first of my friends to marry was in the year before me, but the weddings of my other friends, also in 1965, were seasonal and easy to remember: I was married at Easter that year, another friend was married at Whitsuntide, my best friend was married in the summer (August), and the last of my close friends was married in the winter (November).<\/p>\n

I had a wonderful, happy, white wedding day, surrounded by all the people I loved, as did my pals, but afterwards, how I envied all of them. They married husbands with ordinary nine-to-five jobs, lived on the same housing estate or within a couple of miles away, with mortgages, starting off their lives together in nice, new homes. I married a poorly-paid farm worker, and we spent our first 10 years living in old tied cottages that were always in need of much TLC, moving around the country from job to job and house to house 10 times \u2013 Denby Dale, Scissett, Harrogate, Beverley, Otley (Yorkshire) Sudbury (Derbyshire) Daventry and Byfield (Northamptonshire) The Lucky Ones The couple\u2019s 60th wedding anniversary was marked by a weekend spent with children, grandchildren and friends.<\/p>\n

Below: Ann and Graham were married in April 1965. \u2013 and finally settling in Byfield, where we have lived by default for the last 50 years. My friends all felt sorry for me and didn\u2019t know how I had endured such upheavals. Last year saw 60 years of marriage for my husband and me. Together, we have weathered the ups and downs of married life, and I recently got to thinking about my friends and what life had thrown at them.<\/p>\n

One took her own life after her third child was born. We suspect she was suffering from postnatal depression, although then it wasn\u2019t recognised as such, and sadly left behind two small children and a baby. Another\u2019s husband died of cancer in his 40s. Sadly, she has now been left disabled following a stroke in her late 70s. My best friend and her husband, godparents to our daughter, divorced.<\/p>\n

She was diagnosed with cancer, as was her youngest daughter, my goddaughter. Her oldest daughter developed ME when she was only 17 years old, and now, in her 50s, uses a wheelchair as her condition has worsened over the years. My final friend was also divorced from her husband and died quite young with cancer. Another dear friend of 63 years now, our son\u2019s godfather, lost his wife in 2024. All this sadness makes me thankful and very much aware that despite all my marital disappointments and hard times, I have been the lucky one.<\/p>\n

Not only did fans get to relive some of their favourite moments from the popular sitcom, they would have been able to see their screen heroes in the flesh. While several sitcoms of the era made the transition to the stage, they were often at one fixed summer season location, whereas Dad\u2019s Army: A Nostalgic Music and Laughter Show of Britain\u2019s Finest Hour not only travelled around England but featured a largely older main cast, which makes it even more impressive. Arnold Ridley, who played the gentle Mr Godfrey, celebrated his 80th birthday during the run at the Shaftesbury Theatre.<\/p>\n
