\u201cI was his father\u2019s godson,\u201d Wickham responded mournfully. Given that the night was dark, he did not bother to twist his face into a gentle expression, but he was an expert at conveying emotion through the tone of his voice. \u201cThe elder Mr. Darcy was a truly great man who always preferred me to his son, who was proud and haughty even as a child.<\/p>\n

I fear that since my godfather died, Darcy has done his best to persecute me. \u201cAnna,\u201d Mrs. Culpepper said, \u201cyour sister Lucy is here and wishes to speak to you.\u201d Startled, Anna Wilson looked up from the onions that she was slicing. \u201cLucy is here?\u201d she nearly squeaked. \u201cYes, and you had best go along and talk to her out by the stables,\u201d the cook said, \u201cbut hurry.<\/p>\n

Those onions will not cut themselves.\u201d \u201cYes, Mrs. Culpepper,\u201d Anna replied, putting down her knife and hurrying out the kitchen door to the side passage, and from thence to the side door. She found herself running now, eager yet fearful of learning what had caused her twin sister to leave Netherfield Hall for Longbourn in the middle of the day. Could it be Mamma? Little Eddie? Lucy was standing just inside the stable door and, as soon as Anna had puffed to a halt, said, \u201cNo one is ill or injured, Anna.\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger woman sighed in relief and said, \u201cThank the Lord for that. Whatever are you doing here?\u201d Lucy grimaced and pulled her sister into the shadow cast by the stables, away from where Coachman Jack and the two stable boys were mucking out the stalls of the Longbourn horses. \u201cMr. Darcy, Miss Bingley, and the Hursts left for London thirty minutes ago,\u201d Lucy said, \u201cand they have no intention of returning.<\/p>\n

Moreover, they intend to convince Mr. Bingley to stay in London as well.\u201d Anna gasped and could not help but turn a sympathetic look in the direction of Longbourn, though the manse was on the other side of the stable wall, and thus she could not see it. \u201cPoor Miss Bennet,\u201d she murmured. \u201cThis will break her heart.\u201d \u201cI daresay Mr. Bingley\u2019s heart will break as well,\u201d Lucy said. \u201cI have never seen a man so in love with a lady! But he is a compliant soul and all too inclined to give way to the demands of Mr. Darcy and his sisters.<\/p>\n

It is a pity.\u201d \u201cIt is,\u201d Anna said and then shook her head and turned to more personal matters. \u201cLucy, I fear there are currently no openings here in the servants\u2019 hall, but perhaps Lucas Lodge\u2026\u201d \u201cI am to London with the gentlemen\u2019s valets and the ladies\u2019 maids,\u201d Lucy interrupted, \u201cthough all the other servants at Netherfield Hall, except for Mrs. Nicholls and her niece and nephew, have lost their positions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna was startled. \u201cYou are going to London? Oh, Lucy!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
