She\u2019d sent the challenge, and as much as she knew of his capabilities, she\u2019d done it to fight the duel herself.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t enjoy letting someone else fight her fights for her. However, the way he glared at her made it difficult to contest his words. It didn\u2019t look like he would let her contest what he was saying. Nothing she did would change his mind from that moment forward. Madison clenched her jaw and held her silence. If he really thought he could take the fucker on himself, he was welcome to do it. He was the captain, and he had the right to step in and fight the duel.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well. I\u2019ll take the father or the daughter. I\u2019ll take the lot of you. Send your mother around, and I\u2019ll fuck her, too. Send your son. I don\u2019t care!\u201d Avery stepped back out, followed by his men. Terry\u2019s grand scheme was forgotten while he headed out to join them. The crew spotted what was happening and joined them outside.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long until the street outside was packed with those who wanted to watch. Jackie didn\u2019t mind as long as it wasn\u2019t in her place and breaking her things. Madison heard plenty of the sailors taking bets, and she was surprised to see how even the odds were. She didn\u2019t know how good her father was in a duel, but he couldn\u2019t hold onto his crew if he didn\u2019t know his way around a sword.<\/p>\n

She watched the two men square off against each other while everyone stepped back, allowing them the proper space to fight. Both looked equally comfortable with the swords they\u2019d picked for the fight. The usual pick was sabers, cutlasses like those they used on the decks of their ships, but it wasn\u2019t the same.<\/p>\n

Fighting one-on-one in a duel was a whole different animal from a pitched battle. Even those rare situations that allowed for single combat. It was desperate, with dozens of potentially life- threatening distractions if they weren\u2019t paying enough attention to all of them.<\/p>\n

The voice straightened the back of every cadet in the room. It was as good as a whip cracking over their heads and might as well have been. Hell, they might have preferred a whip over the punishments their sergeants usually came up with. Whatever created the officers running the academy really did break the mold. Madison didn\u2019t like how they seemed driven to ensure nobody ever graduated. It was in their every swagger, every scowl, every attempt to pronounce a word they were sure their cadets had never heard before.<\/p>\n

They would have liked to fail every last wobbly-kneed one of them. They\u2019d already failed a solid third of the class. Those who\u2019d made it to exam day were the ones who stuck it out and pissed them off the most. She always thought it was an odd way to think. It was their job to ensure the cadets made it through the program, but they prided themselves in ensuring few of them did.<\/p>\n

She never understood it. They were proud of their own failures. That said, they did a damn good job of straightening the backs of every cadet in the room with them. She didn\u2019t enjoy how their voices made her back straighten of its own accord. \u201cExam day.\u201d The officer paced out in front of them. His boots connected with the ground with firm clicks that made the faint-hearted cadets look at their feet. \u201cYou were made for this day.<\/p>\n
