\u201cCan you banish it?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d \u201cCan\u2019t we just run from here?\u201d \u201cYou would leave your friends?\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cBesides, running will only delay matters.\u201d \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d \u201cThe Pale Stranger has set its sights on someone. And once it does, it won\u2019t stop until it claims them.\u201d Ivy tensed. \u201cYou mean me?\u201d \u201cIt would appear so.\u201d \u201cFuck.\u201d \u201cIndeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

They wound their way to the rear of the manor house as quickly as the packed partygoers would let them. Ivy found herself back on the metal terrace where she\u2019d first seen Aine as she\u2019d stepped out into the bracing night. Aine tugged Ivy with her hand in hers as they clattered down the steps, as they sprinted out into the darkness of the garden behind Sidhe Manor. Aine stopped towards the far end of the overgrown lawn. \u201cStay behind me,\u201d she said to Ivy as she hauled her robes off over her head, as she pulled her sword out of plain air again.<\/p>\n

Ivy removed her own robes. She shivered in the cold in only her dress and corset. \u201cDon\u2019t let it near you. Don\u2019t let it touch you.\u201d Aine held an object out to Ivy in her free hand. \u201cHere. Hold this.\u201d As Ivy took it, she found herself clutching a golden disk embedded with tiny, glittering precious stones. The centre of it had a circular space with no adornments, just large enough to accept the pad of a thumb. \u201cIf something happens to me, press the centre of the amulet.<\/p>\n

Push your magic into it. Go through the doorway it opens,\u201d \u201cWhat? Why?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019ll take you somewhere else, as a last resort.\u201d \u201cSomewhere safe?\u201d \u201cNo. But not as dangerous as here if the Pale Stranger persists.\u201d \u201cWhy does it want me?\u201d \u201cIt feeds on certain forms of magic. It’s drawn to your power. Tonight, after I fired your sorcery, after what we\u2019ve done, you\u2019re like a blazing light in darkness.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t stop until it’s feasted on you. It\u2019s my fault. I should never have revealed your magic to you.\u201d \u201cNo. Don\u2019t say that. You couldn\u2019t have known. And until that thing appeared, this has been one of the best nights of my life.\u201d Aine smiled at Ivy with disarming sweetness, for a woman so tall and commanding and not a little scary.<\/p>\n
