Or permanent for that matter.\u201d Narvas grinned. \u201cNot that you haven\u2019t tried, eh? Every once in a while, a Hamelineshi ship comes floating up from the strait. They\u2019re always looking for trouble, but we can spot them from a long way off.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what we do? We hide. We extinguish all the candles and the people dip back into the cave. Without the light, this place looks like a deserted pirate haunt.\u201d \u201cEven with the ships?\u201d I asked. \u201cThe ships would be a dead giveaway that someone\u2019s here.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least warrant a little bit of interest on the part of the arriving boat.\u201d Narvas shook his head. \u201cWe leave only a boat or two on the main jetty. The others can slip into the caves. See that hole right there?\u201d He pointed to a section where the water dipped around the cave, creating a hidden nook. \u201cThere are five more boats back there,\u201d he said proudly. \u201cAnd we can fit three more if we wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, they stay moored back there, so that nothing can give this place away. You don\u2019t come here unless we want you to come here.\u201d \u201cIn that case, we\u2019re grateful for your hospitality,\u201d joked Adriana. \u201cAnd as a representative of Hamelin, thank you for allowing me here so graciously after so many centuries of my people failing to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narvas glared at her. \u201cYeah, yeah. A dragon changes everything, okay? That\u2019s the only reason you\u2019re here.\u201d Adriana grinned at me, which I returned. With the boat moored securely, we climbed over the side, with me taking turns helping my women off. I did so with Madeline, who lingered just a little too long once my hands were wrapped around her waist.
