She was defenseless now, and enveloped by the Shadows. They held her tightly, snickering softly to themselves. The wind died down, and Helaine’s head finally stopped spinning. She could see that Pixel and Score were similarly wrapped inside cocoons of living Shadows. They were all completely trapped and helpless.

ixel couldn’t act. He could barely even breathe, because the Shadows en- veloped him so tightly. And it was diffi- cult to think. One thing was very clear, however: all three of them were now prisoners. Without their gems, their powers couldn’t be focused properly. His had been taken, and he was certain that Score’s and Helaine’s had been, too, leaving them almost defenseless. But only almost, because they could still perform magic. Just not as strongly. This didn’t cheer Pixel too much. They hadn’t been able to defeat Garonath with their crystals; without them, how would they even stand a chance?

The Shadows lifted him from the ground and drift- ed with him inside the castle. It was lavishly decorat- ed, with huge tapestries on the walls. There were sev- eral large tables, and far too much furniture for one man. There were statues on pedestals, paintings on stands, and trunks overflowing with jewelry. Since Garonath wore none of it, Pixel realized that the tubby magician had the treasure only because he wanted it.

Unlike both Aranak’s and Shanara’s studies, there were virtually no books here; just a small case with about twenty slim volumes. Garonath was obviously not a big reader. It also explained why most of his spells were repetitious. He didn’t know too many. Still, if the ones he did know worked so well, he probably didn’t need more. Puffing a bit from all his effort, Garonath followed his captives inside. He muttered another spell, and suddenly the Shadows released Pixel. Before he could either fall or stand on his wobbly legs, however, there was something new around him, holding him in place against one bare section of the wall.

Score was positioned to his left, and Helaine to his right. Pixel realized that he was encased in a cocoon of dried, hardened mud, pinned by it to the wall. He could breathe, but couldn’t move his hands and feet. The mud, thankfully, stopped at his shoulders, so his head was free.

“Like it?” asked Garonath smugly. “I got the idea from you. Don’t try struggling,” he added to Helaine, who was almost red in the face from her efforts. “You won’t get free.” The Shadows darted back and forth in the air over their heads. “We have done as we have promised,” one of them hissed. “Now it is time for our reward.” “Of course,” agreed Garonath. He gestured at the captives.

“Go ahead.”

is the author of numerous best-selling novels for young adults, including installments in the Star Trek, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? series.
