But there\u2019s not a lot of us.\u201d \u201cYet you do not like it here, surely?\u201d Helaine asked. \u201cWhat difference does that make?\u201d the woman growled. \u201cThere\u2019s nowhere else to go. So we make the best of things here\u2014we run what we can, and collect our tribute. It makes our miserable lives a little less bleak.\u201d Helaine stood up and glared with contempt at the woman. \u201cIs that all you desire?\u201d she asked scornfully. \u201cTo prey upon those who cannot resist you?\u201d The woman was about six inches taller than she, and Helaine was tall for a girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat else is there?\u201d the woman demanded. \u201cEscape,\u201d Helaine said firmly. \u201cFight back. Take from the Overseers.\u201d The woman laughed. \u201cYou must be insane. There\u2019s no way to do that.\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d agreed Helaine. \u201cThere isn\u2019t\u2014f that is what you believe, then you are already too much a slave to ever become free.\u201d She deliberately turned her back on the woman.<\/p>\n

Ce! A hand on her shoulder spun her around. \u201cDon\u2019t sound so contemptuous,\u201d she snapped. \u201cYou’re like me, or you wouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d \u2018T\u2019m not like you at all,\u201d Helaine spat back. \u201cI fight!\u201d \u201cWell,\u201d the woman said slowly, \u201cif you want to fight .. .\u201d She swung a punch at Helaine. This was more like it! Helaine laughed, and moved aside, so that the blow failed to connect. Her own fist slammed into her attacker\u2019s stomach, sending the breath whistling from the woman. \u201cThat is not fight- ing,\u201d she said scornfully.<\/p>\n

The woman gasped for breath, her face red. Then, furious, she threw herself into Helaine, and they both went crashing to the floor. Helaine could have won the fight any time she chose, because the woman was not a good fighter. But winning this was not her aim; instead, she was hoping for a different outcome. So in- stead she simply punched and blocked, letting the woman land a couple of blows that didn\u2019t really hurt, and provoking her into keeping going by a carefully placed punch or two of her own.<\/p>\n

Finally, the woman did what Helaine had been hop- ing for\u2014she reached out and grabbed a couple of handfuls of Helaine\u2019s hair. Then she started tugging at it. Helaine screamed, mostly for show, and shook her head, trying to get free of the grip\u2014apparently. Even the restraint could sense that. But, as she struggled, the attachments that held the restraint in place started to come loose. . . And since Helaine wasn\u2019t trying to remove the re- straint, the overwhelming pain never began .<\/p>\n

Helaine fought on, deliberately badly, allowing the woman to wrench at her hair. Finally, thankfully, the restraint was completely free, and the woman snatched it from Helaine\u2019s head in triumph. \u201cMine now,\u201d she crowed, and moved to place it on her own head.<\/p>\n
