It\u2019s disgusting.\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s saved my life more than once,\u201d Score an- swered. \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, she can do whatev- er she likes, and \u2019ll back her up, gladly.\u201d Pixel looked uncomfortable. \u201cI really don\u2019t think you’re helping matters, Score,\u201d he said. He turned to Lord Votrin. \u201cYour daughter is our friend, sir, and we will help her to help you as much as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can the two of you do?\u201d Lord Votrin asked. \u201cYou\u2019re both too scrawny to be fighters, and even if you were great warriors, two more on my walls won\u2019t hold off the attackers for very long.\u201d \u201cWe’re not soldiers, true enough,\u201d Pixel agreed. \u201cBut we have other, more valuable skills.\u201d \u201cAt this moment,\u201d Dafyd replied, \u201cwe don\u2019t need other skills. We need swords, thousands of them.\u201d \u201cPardon me,\u201d Pixel said gently, \u201cbut you honestly don\u2019t know what you really need. The three\u2014four,\u201d he added hastily, glancing at Jenna and blushing, \u201cof us can do more than a small army could, once we know what needs doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lord Votrin growled, and turned to Helaine. \u201cYou chose a poor time to leave, daughter,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd an even poorer one to return. And, it seems, you asso- ciate with a very poor group of friends. A peasant and two outspoken and foolish young men. If these are the people you give your friendship to, then | truly despair of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Score looked at Helaine. \u201cI know he\u2019s your father, but can I just whomp him once? He really needs some of that arrogance knocked out of him, the old wind- bag.\u201d Jenna felt a lot closer to Score when he said that. She had always despised the nobles for the treatment of the common people; now she was amazed to dis- cover that they treated their own just as badly.<\/p>\n

She al- most felt sorry for Helaine, who was clearly trying to get along with her father and brother, and failing mis- erably. Lord Votrin glared at Score. \u201cYou are a guest in my home,\u201d he said coldly, \u201cand for that I make some al- lowances. And you’re the friend of my foolish daugh- ter, so 1 make more. But there is a limit to my benev- olence.\u201d<\/p>\n

used his right hind foot to scratch just be- hind his red, furry ear. After a moment, the itch subsided and he felt comfort- able enough to start a good, long nap, which he so richly deserved. \u201cYou lazy creature,\u201d Shanara said, sweeping into the room with her usual hateful energy and liveliness. \u201cYou’re not thinking of sleeping again, are you?\u201d \u201clm tired,\u201d Blink protested. \u201cI\u2019ve had a very busy morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou only ate breakfast.\u201d \u201cLike I said, I\u2019ve had a very busy morning.\u201d Shanara eyed him in her usual fashion\u2014a long, hard look that promised lots and lots of work. \u201cI just hope I never meet a lazier, greedier creature than you in my life,\u201d she muttered. \u201cYou’d try the patience of a saint.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not a saint,\u201d Blink replied. \u201cIf anything, you’re the exact opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shanara smiled sweetly, and tossed her long, blue hair over her shoulder. Like most humans, she was very vain about her appearance. Unlike most humans, her appearance changed whenever she wished it. Shanara was a very powerful magician, who special- ized in illusions. She never let any other human being see her as she really was. In fact, even though Blink had been with her for several years, even he wasn\u2019t certain he knew what she really looked like.<\/p>\n

And he wondered if, after all these years of altering her own looks, whether Shanara knew what she was under- neath all that illusion. Not that it really mattered; Blink could always tell what Shanara was. . . She was the one who made him work while all he wanted to do was to sleep. \u201cWhat can be so important?\u201d he asked her, plain- tively. \u201cThere\u2019s no impending crisis that I know of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know much, and that\u2019s a fact,\u201d Shanara scoffed. \u201cI know the values of beauty sleep,\u201d he said, hinting hard, but it had no effect on her. Some days she could be so cruel. \u201cThis is for Score, Helaine, and Pixel,\u201d she in- formed him. \u201cIT thought they were still resting,\u201d he complained. \u201cThose three?\u201d Shanara laughed. \u201cI sometimes think they don\u2019t know how to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cT could teach them,\u201d Blink offered. \u201cI\u2019m an expert.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s true, but it\u2019s a useless talent.\u201d The magician looked around her laboratory. It was filled with po- tions, powders, jars, flasks, books, papers, strange ap- paratus, and dust. She wasn\u2019t a particularly tidy per- son. It was one of her virtues, Blink thought. He hated people who bustled around, cleaning up and disturb- ing him. \u201cHelaine may need to go back to Ordin,\u201d Shanara said. Blink looked at Shanara, even though he could barely keep his eyes open.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought she\u2019d given up that place for good,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t blame her. All that fighting! It sounds most exhausting.\u201d \u201cBreathing sounds exhausting to you,\u201d Shanara mut- tered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
