Since it’s typically not possible to boil water to sterilize it (or the formula) while traveling, liquid ready-to-feed formula is recommended for those who need a sterile product. Choose smaller volumes, like two-ounce or eight-ounce bottles or cartons, so any extra can be tossed (freeing you from the need to keep it cold for the next feeding).

Consider bringing a portable bottle warmer: If your baby is picky about their bottle temperature, consider investing in a portable warmer. There are a handful of rechargeable, battery-operated warmers that are perfect for travel or on the go! Check with your preferred brand to ensure the product is TSA-approved for carry-on or checked luggage. Identify a bag for dirty bottles: Once your baby is happily fed, you’ll need somewhere to store their used bottles! I recommend bringing an empty gallon-size zip-top bag or a plastic grocery bag where you can place bottle parts after the bottle has been dumped and rinsed.

Label it so it’s clear the bag is for bottles that are dirty! These will need to be washed eventually, of course, but segregating them into a “dirty bag” reduces the likelihood that an hours-old bottle gets picked up from the pocket of the diaper bag and accidentally reused. Bring dish soap and a small brush: It’s not ideal to wash bottles in a hotel bathroom sink.

We don’t really want our bottles chilling in the sink with all of our mouth germs from brushing our teeth! But if you have some dish soap and a small bottle brush, it’s doable, and your plastic bag is going to come in handy again. Take your dirty bottle parts out and put them on the counter, rinse out the bag, and fill it halfway with warm, soapy water.

Put your bottle parts back in, seal or clamp off the top of the bag, and slosh those bottles around! We want that warm soapy water to wash all the pieces. You can set the bag down in the basin of the sink to take each piece out, scrub with the brush, and then rinse. Washed and rinsed bottle pieces can be placed on a clean, dry hand towel to air-dry.

Thank you for downloading this Simon & Schuster ebook. She is creative and kind, smart and silly, funny and hardworking, and so beautiful it hurts. She and her brother are two of the very best things to ever happen to me. And when she was born, I was convinced I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

Maybe your experience is different—perhaps you feel nothing but overwhelming love and gratitude for the little human in your arms. I am so thrilled for you! Truly. That just wasn’t the case for me. From the moment she arrived, I felt overwhelmed. Underwater. Totally and completely unprepared for the reality of having a tiny baby who was dependent on me for every one of her needs, night and day, relentlessly (or so it felt, even with a supportive partner).

And you might be thinking, Mallory, didn’t you take any of those baby classes? Didn’t you read any books? The answer is yes. I took the classes. I read the books. I researched and learned and listened to experts and dug in deep on how to do this parenting thing “the right way.” And then my baby came along and the whole plan went to shit. Because babies do that, right? They don’t care about how they “should” behave, or what your goals are, or what the parenting books say.

They only know how to cry and eat and poop, and frankly, they don’t even do those last two very well at first. Babies are whole (albeit squishy) humans who come with their own set of needs and challenges that, unfortunately, can’t be fully explored until they arrive earth-side. The biggest source of my stress in those early days and weeks with my girl was trying to feed her.

She was late preterm and wasn’t motivated to eat. My milk was delayed due to a scheduled C-section and undiagnosed gestational diabetes. My daughter lost a lot of weight. I couldn’t express any milk—not even drops— for days.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
