Casting a look at the literature which has appeared since 1971 when Poems from East Africa, edited by Cook and Rubadiri, was published, the eye takes note of collections by individual poets such as Jared Angira; plays by Francis Imbuga and others; and, of course, the novels and other writing by Ngugi wa Thiong\u2019o, Meja Mwangiand others.<\/p>\n<p>The appearance of several collections of oral literature is another unmistakable literary land- mark. One book, however, has not appeared: a collection of poems by various poets in Kenya. Many are the aspiring poets that have come to light during this period; many the poems and verses that have been composed; and many the poetic experiments that have taken place with varying degrees of success. Two areas of literary activity need to be mentioned here to give a fuller picture of the background to the present collection of poems.<\/p>\n<p>First, over the same period, the Literature syllabi in secondary and higher institutions has exposed more students to poetry and oral literature than ever before.
