Naomi stirs, stretches, the hem of the sheets sliding higher up her thigh. I force my eyes away before I change my mind. No time for softness now. The mask goes back on. The hallway smells like lemon oil and polished stone. The villa hums with heat and age\u2014arched doorways, frescoed ceilings, echoes of a thousand secrets. I pass a sunlit courtyard where a gardener snips lavender, but it doesn\u2019t reach me. The sitting room is a shrine to old money and older power.<\/p>\n

Vito lounges like a monarch, crisp linen suit, gold rings gleaming. Dante scrolls through his phone with a glass of Barolo in hand. Claudia sits poised like a painting\u2014flawless, deliberate, untouchable. Her dress is white. The irony is fucking blinding. \u201cYou\u2019re late,\u201d Vito says, not looking up. \u201cDidn\u2019t realize we scheduled this ambush.\u201d Claudia rises, smile razor-sharp. \u201cGideon. You look\u2026 well used.\u201d I give her nothing. \u201cTuscany\u2019s good for the blood.\u201d She glides over, kisses my cheeks\u2014air, calculation, currency. She steps back and scans me like she\u2019s taking inventory.<\/p>\n
