\u201cDon\u2019t. There\u2019s no need to even mention it.\u201d He flicked his gaze to Bray. \u201cDoes he need his hair washed or anything?\u201d \u201cNope, he\u2019s all done. It\u2019s playtime now.\u201d She stood. \u201cI\u2019ll just be a few minutes.\u201d She slipped out of the bathroom. Bray watched him curiously. \u201cCan you try again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brick asked. Bray grinned, filled the cup with water, and doused his head. He let out another gregarious laugh then did it again, but he breathed too soon and inhaled a mouthful of water. He dropped the cup and flailed his arms. \u201cMomma!\u201d he called, through his gasps. Brick grabbed the towel and wiped Bray\u2019s face dry. \u201cIt\u2019s okay, buddy. Take a breath.\u201d The boy swiped his cheek with his hand, getting water in his eyes and nose again, but this time he didn\u2019t panic. \u201cDo you want the towel again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brick asked. Bray nodded. Brick wiped him again. \u201cThere you go. Where\u2019s your cup?\u201d \u201cO\u2019er there.\u201d Brick chuckled. In other words, \u201cYou get it.\u201d He reached for the yellow cup and filled it with water. \u201cDo you want to dump it?\u201d He shook his head. Well, shit. Bray had been having so much fun. He didn\u2019t want the kid to stop playing because he was scared. \u201cShould I try?\u201d Bray gave him a huge toothy grin. \u201cYou try!\u201d \u201cAll right.\u201d He leaned over the tub and dumped the water over his head.<\/p>\n

The warm liquid washed over his face. Bray\u2019s laughter bounced off the bathroom wall. Brick swiped his face with his palm. \u201cAgain!\u201d Well, hell. \u201cMe try.\u201d Bray quickly reached for the cup, then filled it and raised it in the air. Brick dipped his head. Water ran over his hair, down the back of his neck, and soaked his shirt.<\/p>\n

But Bray\u2019s delight was contagious. Brick peeled his wet shirt off and dropped it on the bathroom floor. \u201cAgain?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bray lay snuggled in her arms, his stuffed dog tight in his grasp and his white fluffy blanket wrapped around him. The chair wasn\u2019t as nice as the one she\u2019d left behind at Keetan\u2019s, and the wood dug into her spine, but Bray was happy to have their rocking routine back.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d both missed it. Bray fell asleep quickly, making her even happier she\u2019d taken him swimming at the indoor public pool earlier. She stood and, in the darkness of their shared bedroom, moved to the wall where his crib waited. She lay him on the thin mattress and he immediately flipped onto his tummy and sighed. Sweeping her hand over his dark curls, she felt her heart ache. Leaving their home two weeks ago had been tough, but he\u2019d finally settled in their new space. And he hadn\u2019t even asked about Keetan.<\/p>\n

She slipped out of the room and shut the door. In the living room, she lowered herself to the sofa. The apartment had come partially furnished, and the owner had been nice enough to pull an old crib out of storage for her. She\u2019d finally broken away from Keetan. She was still in disbelief that she no longer had to walk on eggshells. She didn\u2019t have to count the hours until he went to work, or dodge him when he was home. She also didn\u2019t have to pretend to fall asleep with Bray so he couldn\u2019t try to get in her pants.<\/p>\n

Keetan\u2019s lack of response to her leaving him had her reeling, though.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
