\u201cThey didn\u2019t just take us and leave her behind, right? You think she\u2019s alive?\u201d I hadn\u2019t let myself think that yet. \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d \u201cMaybe she\u2019s with Kavi.\u201d \u201cMaybe.\u201d I leaned back in my chair. \u201cLook, we\u2019re not in a good position here. No one knows we\u2019ve been taken. No chance of backup on the way. Our FBI status means nothing here. As far as anyone else knows, we haven\u2019t officially gone missing.\u201d He nodded. \u201cWhen I was sitting next to Becket earlier,\u201d I went on, \u201call I could think was here\u2019s the guy who could clear our names.<\/p>\n

And there was nothing I could do to make that happen.\u201d \u201cMaybe if I beat him senseless,\u201d Kang said. \u201cThat might kick-start things.\u201d \u201cTempting,\u201d I said. \u201cBut there\u2019s one thing working in our favor. Most of the people here? They\u2019re just employees collecting a paycheck. Do they live here, or are they free to come and go for their shifts? Lastly, I don\u2019t see armed men everywhere, like there were in the Darkside.\u201d \u201cSo, you\u2019re saying there\u2019s a way.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m saying if we play our cards right, we can get out of here and bring Becket down in the process.<\/p>\n

The key to that is information.\u201d Kang wiped his mouth. \u201cHave you talked to anyone else besides Becket? Staff? Patients?\u201d \u201cI haven\u2019t, but the way out of here is to treat this like any investigation \u2014gather information and form leads.\u201d We exchanged a look. For the first time since waking up, I didn\u2019t feel completely alone.<\/p>\n

I had my partner, my best friend, the person who I could count on in any situation, sitting right across from me. Would the other patients? I doubted it. This might be a prison for Kang and me, but for everyone else, it was a clinic. Which meant it was time to mingle.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou ever notice how the brightest places hide the darkest shit?\u201d Becket said as he walked alongside a man wearing a lab coat. The two walked briskly down a whitewashed hallway that screamed clinical. Bright lights above shone down, giving shadows no chance to live. Every so often they would pass a closed, unmarked door.<\/p>\n

No one else was in the area. \u201cYou would know. You spent the last, what, three years underground,\u201d the lab coat guy said as he adjusted his glasses. \u201cI wasn\u2019t underground entirely. I had a life, you know.\u201d \u201cIf that\u2019s what you called a life, I worry about you, Bishop.\u201d \u201cI told you, I go by the name Denny Becket. Stop referring to my old name.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t get it. That assignment is over, no?\u201d \u201cYeah, it is, but the name grew on me\u2026<\/p>\n

I\u2019m actually thinking of keeping it.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re shitting me?\u201d \u201cI shit you not.\u201d \u201cI never would have imagined in a million years\u2026\u201d \u201cWhy? What\u2019s wrong with Denny Becket?\u201d \u201cNothing, but you\u2019re not really a deputy.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t need to be Deputy Becket. Just Becket is good enough. And to be honest, Bishop is an alias from another assignment, so really, I\u2019m just a freaking chameleon.\u201d \u201cReally? I had no idea\u2026\u201d Becket stopped and turned to the lab coat guy. \u201cGo on, spit it out. Your face has this look of disgust on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not disgusted. It\u2019s just, compared to Bishop, Becket seems so Midwestern. Too goody-two-shoes for someone like yourself.\u201d Becket shrugged and continued walking. \u201cMaybe I\u2019m turning over a new leaf.\u201d \u201cYeah right, and maybe hell is freezing over.\u201d They made a turn down another hallway, where they faced more white walls and more tiled floors and more unmarked doors. \u201cSurely you didn\u2019t bring me all the way over here to discuss the merits of my name.\u201d \u201cI did not. We have good news. Everything looks great. Vitals are strong, given the situation.<\/p>\n

Recovery is still day to day, but we\u2019re bullish,\u201d the lab coat guy said. \u201cAre you absolutely sure? Last time you were bullish, things turned into a clusterfuck.\u201d \u201cOh please, you\u2019re not still bringing that up, are you? That was years ago. Technology has advanced. We\u2019re light-years ahead of that.\u201d \u201cI just don\u2019t want to be disappointed. I\u2019ve got bosses and decisions that need to be made. We have big plans upon us.\u201d \u201cOh, do we? Care to share?\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t, but I can tell you it involves expansion.<\/p>\n

But we need him\u2014I need him. He\u2019ll just make it easier. And I\u2019m all about easy after what happened back in Hillside Estates.\u201d \u201cYeah, that was a major screw-up, right? The entire place imploding, losing everyone.\u201d \u201cTell me about it.
