I nodded, but my eyes stayed on Elizabeth Pennington. This wasn\u2019t just another case. This wasn\u2019t just another trial. The outcome would impact lives already torn apart. Her anguish was as powerful as my determination\u2014and I knew I had to carry both with me as I pushed forward. I spent the rest of the day in the office, focused on Julie Steinberg\u2019s case, but Elizabeth Pennington lingered in my thoughts.<\/p>\n

I visited the hospital at lunchtime, and met Emma in the waiting room. She\u2019d been allowed brief visits with her mother in isolation, but there wasn\u2019t much anyone could do for her. I stayed for an hour before I returned to the office. I talked to Emma on the phone in the afternoon; she was going to her auntie\u2019s for dinner, and then returning to the hospital.<\/p>\n

I told her she needed to sleep at some point, and she agreed, saying she\u2019d be home later that night. As the time ticked past 9 p.m., Emma messaged and said she was heading home. I told her I\u2019d meet her there. When I stepped out of the office, I noticed the truck parked across the road under the beam of the streetlight. There was a man standing outside it. I caught his eye, then turned toward him. She hadn\u2019t slept much. She kept checking her phone, looking at the messages, and seeing if the hospital had called.<\/p>\n

I stayed with her for most of the morning, keeping her company and showing her support. The doctors and nurses didn\u2019t have much to tell us. Jane was fighting hard, they said, but the outlook was still uncertain. Around midday, Emma\u2019s aunties arrived, and I drove back to the office.<\/p>\n
