By this time, all of this class were, at least on paper, allocated to Shoeburyness. The domeless taper boiler and cut outs in the rear bunker are improvements on the Fowler engines. It has one of the later build boilers fitted to the class, with three mudholes on the shoulder of the firebox.

Built at Derby in September 1933, it was a Longsight engine at Nationalisation, moved to Barrow in the summer of 1948, and stayed there until February 1963, when it moved to Stockport, from which shed it was withdrawn five months later. British Railways Illustrated Volume 35 March 2026 Fowler 2-6-4T 42399, one of the later engines fitted with a limousine cab, is on shed near the turntable on 1st April 1958 and appears to be prepared for either a test run or a return to its home shed of Longsight.

It would be reasonable to expect these members of the class to be used in the more northerly areas, and in 1951 this was clearly the case. At that time there were ten in Scotland (eight at Greenock and two at Corkerhill), Longsight being the most southerly depot running them. In 1953 the Scottish ten were exchanged for Fairburn engines and by 1958 even Willesden had one.

42399 was still a Longsight engine when withdrawn in 1960.

Back to the Future – Britain’s Railways Looking Forward Back to the Future – Britain’s Railways Looking Forward FREE on-line at www.guidelinepublications.co.uk ISSUE 59 March 2026 www.guideline publications.co.uk FREE on-line at www.guidelinepublications.co.uk Changing Trains Changing Trains West Coastway West Coastway WR Britannias – Aboard for the Cambrian – Irish Jeeps – Bradshaws in Sussex – Notts Survivor The Cinder Path Derby Days West of Salisbury Grow your brand Grow your brand Grow your brand Grow your brand Grow your brand and advertise with…

and advertise with… and advertise with… and advertise with… and advertise with… Increase you business with an advert in our superb range of Railway Magazines.
