I refuse to acknowledge how his proximity fires me up. \u201cWe could totally order pizza instead.\u201d \u201cButter.\u201d His voice has dropped an octave which does dangerous things to my insides. \u201cThink you can handle that?\u201d<\/p>\n

I reach for the butter dish, deliberately angling my body so my French maid\u2019s dress rides up. Two can play this game. His sharp intake of breath is deeply satisfying. \u201cLike this?\u201d I hold the butter knife like a toddler with a crayon, while fighting the muscle memory of years of proper technique. His hand closes over mine again.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you trying to destroy my kitchen?\u201d \u201cMaybe.\u201d I wiggle into him and pretend to adjust my stance. The sound he makes is definitely not PG-13. \u201cBe still.\u201d His command comes out rough. \u201cOr what?\u201d My provocative question slips out before I can stop it. His free hand grips my hip and holds me in place. \u201cOr this grilled cheese is going to turn into something else entirely.\u201d Heat pools low in my belly. \u201cIs that like, a threat or a promise?\u201d \u201cDepends.\u201d<\/p>\n

His thumb strokes circles over my hipbone, and sparks shoot up my spine. \u201cOn whether you can focus long enough to butter bread without causing a national incident.\u201d I manage to absolutely massacre the bread with butter, while hyperaware of every point where his body touches mine. The knife shakes a little, and not entirely for show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere!\u201d I announce brightly and present my disaster. \u201cInstagram- worthy, right?\u201d He looks at the mangled bread, then at me. Danger flickers in those gunmetal-colored eyes. \u201cYou\u2019re doing this on purpose.\u201d \u201cDoing what?\u201d I\u2019m all wide-eyed and innocent. \u201cBeing, like, totally helpful and stuff?\u201d His fingers flex on my hip. \u201cWe\u2019ll see about that.\u201d<\/p>\n
