Even a dragon.\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve heard of basilisks, or at least human myths about them,\u201d the bespectacled woman said. \u201cIs it true they can kill you with a look?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d I said gravely. \u201cThankfully, this one seems to have discovered the incredible human invention of sunglasses, so he can get around with less suspicion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll look like an asshole, but at least he won\u2019t be a weirdo walking around with his eyes closed– or killing everyone he looks at,\u201d Stacey muttered. Then, in a gesture that seemed so simple I doubted she consciously realized she was doing it, she reached for Liang\u2019s hands, threaded their fingers together, and squeezed reassuringly. \u201cWell,\u201d Liang then said with a small smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI might not be able to fight, but I\u2019m at least immune to that part.\u201d I let out a laugh and was surprised by both it and her point. \u201cI suppose that\u2019s true,\u201d I agreed. \u201cI wonder if that was why he was after you.\u201d \u201cYou think?\u201d she asked as she cocked her head. \u201cHonestly, I have no idea,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never known basilisks to have specific targets in mind. Usually, they just go for whoever is foolish enough not to realize what they are. And they don\u2019t often have much cause for revenge– very few people can trick a basilisk and get away with it.\u201d \u201cUnless you\u2019re a dragon,\u201d Stacey pointed out. \u201cGood point,\u201d I said with a nod. \u201cHe\u2019s really after me?\u201d Liang then asked. She looked daunted by the idea, and I didn\u2019t blame her.<\/p>\n

Gently, I put a hand to her shoulder to demonstrate where I was in relation to her, and then I pulled her into a quick, reassuring hug. \u201cHe\u2019s not going to get you,\u201d I promised. \u201cNot him, not the Crimson 88, not anyone. You\u2019re safe with me.\u201d \u201cI know,\u201d she murmured, and her free arm, the one not holding Stacey\u2019s hand, came up to hug me back.<\/p>\n

Even in the summer months, the city had a chill to it, and while I certainly wasn\u2019t as susceptible to cold as a human, I probably felt it more. I was, after all, a dragon. Fire burned in my heart and flowed through my veins.<\/p>\n

I was flame made flesh. I could withstand the cold, yes, but my preferred habitat was the base of a volcano, where I could lie on the warm, freshly-hardened stone of an eruption. If I concentrated, I could still feel the heat sizzling against my scales, and I recalled one incident where a foolish knight– merely one in a long line of foolish knights over the centuries– had engaged me in battle in the heart of my once-home. I couldn\u2019t remember why or how I\u2019d allowed him to venture so deeply into the cave.<\/p>\n

Maybe I\u2019d been recovering from some injury. Maybe I\u2019d just allowed him to think things were going well, for my own entertainment. Whatever the reason, the outcome had been the same. Blackened bones and armor reduced to lumps of slag. But I remembered how at one point, before the fight began, the knight removed his glove and reached out a hand to touch my scales.<\/p>\n

I allowed this only because I\u2019d seen the hand was empty and unarmed, even as I\u2019d pretended to still be asleep. Whatever petty dagger he might have had stowed away would not have been enough to pierce my scales, and I\u2019d been curious about what he thought he could do. I never found out, because as soon as his palm touched my hide, he\u2019d recoiled with a gasp of pain, with a pattern of my scales scorched into his flesh. Now, decades or perhaps even a century later, I wondered if he\u2019d simply been awed by me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
