In the former case, the only justification for the difference in salaries between the pay of the professor of computer science and the professor of English is that of the marketplace.

The market, if fair, is blind concerning sex or race. But discrimination on the basis of skill is permissible. The skill of the computer scientist is not greater in his domain than the skill of the English professor. But the computer scientist’s skill is in shorter supply than the skill of the English teacher; the computer scientist therefore commands higher pay. The justification is that in the long run the market, bv differential reward, will signal the need for more computer scientists and for fewer English professors.

Students interested in income will pay attention to these signals and act accordingly. Those who refuse to do so and take their chances on receiving appointments as English professors, should realize that ihev will receive less than computer scientists with comparable training. Such wage dif- ferentials help allocate human resources to where they are most needed, and are justifiable because of the efficiency they thus promote.

This justification takes into account the system, as any justification should. Those who knowingly choose poorer-paying positions cannot legitimately complain that their positions are poorly paid. No one is forced to take a par- ticular position, and those willing and able to prepare for the skills for which there is most demand will receive the best returns.

Professors of some subjects may receive less pay than people with similar training in industry, but pre- sumably there are attractions in the teaching profession that compensate for less pay. If this were not so, there would be a shortage of qualified pet)ple in academia, and the pay for professors would have to be increased as it has increased for professors of computer science.

Because professors of the hu- manities are in less demand outside of academia, the pay sufficient to attract and hold professors of the humanities is less than what is necessarv to attract and hold professors of computer science.

Copyright © 1986, Macmillan Publishing Company, a division of Macmillan. Courses in business ethics are of more recent vintage. The latter took root in the post-Watergate era, and were matured bv successi\\e exposes involving bril^es and kickbacks, illegal political contributions, airplane disasters, and the sale of defective tires, au- tomobiles, and other products. C^onsumerism, the cry for increased govern- mental control, and a changing attitude of large numbers of people toward business and its social responsibility have made questions of business ethics topics of general and current concern.

I his book is an attempt to cover the field in a systematic and reasonably comprehensive way. It deals first with the techniques of moral reasoning and argumentation that are needed to analyze moral issues in business. It then raises basic questions alM)ut the moralit) of economic systems, especially that of the United States. It next discusses a variety of current and pressing moral i.ssues in business, from worker’s rights to trade secrets. Finallv, it discusses the moral obligations of nations to other nations, of peoples to other peoples geographically distant from them, and of one generation to later generations.

Because business ethics is a comparatively new field of scholarly endeavor, I should make clear some of my presuppositions and aims from the start. This is not a b<H)k on general ethics, one that simply takes its examples from the business world.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
