Not without rolling out of this car and onto the road, and even then, who would be there to find me? No, I\u2019m best staying right where I am, at least for now. I can get my bearings, and figure out how I\u2019m going to get out of this once we get wherever we\u2019re going. This guy saved me from a mugger with a knife to my throat.<\/p>\n

I hope, at least, that means he wants to keep me alive. “Close your eyes,” he orders me, making me jump after sitting so long in silence. “Get some sleep. You haven\u2019t been resting enough recently.” “How would you know how much I\u2014” He keeps his eyes on the road as I stutter to a halt.<\/p>\n

Oh, yeah. Of course he knows how much I sleep. Because if he has really been as involved in my life as he claims to be, then he knows everything about me, and I don\u2019t have any idea what to make of that. “Clara. Sleep. Now.” I close my eyes and turn my head away from him, at least if I pretend I\u2019m asleep, I don\u2019t have to deal with talking to him.<\/p>\n

I have no idea where we\u2019re going, or where I\u2019m going to be when I wake up and I know those things should be very pressing issues. But, for some reason, in his presence, I feel a wash of calm that I haven\u2019t felt in a while. Has he really been looking out for me for months\u2014no\u2026 years? Because if he has\u2026 he might just be the man I\u2019ve been waiting for.<\/p>\n

Flashes of it come back to me, I remember being at the grocery store and then walking home, then that mugger, and then\u2026 Oh, God! I sit bolt upright, my eyes swimming around the room.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in a large bedroom, of what looks like some kind of log cabin, the floors made of an intertwining red and brown wood, the walls made to match. There\u2019s a large window that looks out to a forest.<\/p>\n

straighten my jacket, smooth down my hair, and smile at my reflection in the polished glass door at the entrance to the office. This time, it\u2019s going to be different. I repeat my mantra as I plant my hand against the door and push it open. Stepping inside, my scuffed heels click against the marble floor. A receptionist lifts her head and gives me a picture-perfect smile as I approach. “Here for the interview?”<\/p>\n

she asks, and I nod. “Just down the hall, to your left,” she replies. “Sign in at the door.\u201d “Thank you.” I keep my voice as chirpy as I can, not wanting to make a bad impression on anyone. After all, these people could be my co-workers down the line. If things go better than they have been, at least. And God knows I could use a little luck.<\/p>\n

We just can\u2019t deal with this drama, Clara. That\u2019s what my last boss had told me with a sympathetic look on his face when he\u2019d asked me to leave the office once and for all. I mean, I can\u2019t say I blame him. Given how often Gavin was turning up there, they might as well have started giving him a paycheck, too. But that left me with no job, along with no way to pay my bills, and a savings account that was rapidly dwindling.<\/p>\n

But this job, I\u2019m going to get. I haven\u2019t seen Gavin in three days, a new record, since we broke up. Maybe he\u2019s finally getting bored of this. Maybe \u2014 My hope freezes in its tracks when I round the final corner, and find myself staring at the rest of the applicants sitting in identical chairs as they wait to get called in for their interviews.<\/p>\n

None of them would stand out to me, at a glance, they were all in smart suits, the same sensible haircuts. All ready to convince the head of this advertising department that they\u2019d make the perfect secretary. But there, sitting amongst them, is someone staring straight back at me. Gavin. I take a step backwards, the sudden movement draws the attention of a few people, who peer at me in confusion.<\/p>\n

For a second, I want to convince myself that this is nothing more than a mirage, nothing more than my overstressed mind seeing things that aren\u2019t there, but then that thought is quickly diminished when he stands. As he gets to his feet and begins to move towards me, I know that this is nothing but a nightmare. “Gavin, what are you doing here?” I ask, my voice strangled as he approaches.<\/p>\n

Everyone is looking. “I\u2019m not allowed to apply for jobs now?” he shoots back, tone laced with venom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
