The aphorism works by switching between two meanings of the word miracle. The first is approximately “a violation of the laws of nature”; the second is “a cause of awe and wonder.” Einstein believed nothing is a miracle in the sense of violation of the laws of nature, but he frequently referred in religious terms to ideas like “the grandeur of reason incarnate in existence.”

3 So maybe he lived his life simultaneously in both of the two ways. It will help clarify our considerations if we put aside the meaning associated with living as if everything is a miracle. The wonder of the world and of life is certainly something to marvel at and, theists would say, be thankful for. But that’s not what most people mean when they talk about miracles. They are not talking about the aspects of existence that, however wonderful, are the ordinary or the “everything”; instead they are talking about out-of-the-ordinary happenings, associated with the actions of God.

Could you define what a miracle is? How can you tell if one happens? Can you give us a scientific interpretation of miracles? Many people today think of a miracle as a “violation of the laws of nature.” But since Bible miracles are the ones that matter most to the relationship between science and Christianity, we should ask what the Bible meaning is. Obviously the English word miracle doesn’t occur in the original Greek of the New Testament.

2.1 Won’t Science Eventually Explain Everything? 2.2 Can Science Investigate the Past? 2.3 Can Science Address the Big Questions? 2.4 Isn’t All Real Knowledge Science? 2.5 What Happens When Science Explains the Brain?
