The truth was, he was undeniably attracted to Henri. The kiss had not felt like a sin. It had been beautiful, and right. It had been the truest thing he’d done in a long time, true because no one had told him to do it. He hadn’t kissed Henri because it would please anyone, or because it would check any boxes, but because he knew, in that moment, that it was what he had wanted. And how could that be wrong?

All these thoughts knocked around in Cort’s head while he walked through Toronto. He worried about the conversation with Henri. Were these thoughts things he could tell Henri? Would Henri understand why this was hard for Cort, or would he dismiss Cort’s anxieties? Cort knew there was only one way for him to find out, and that would mean trusting Henri. Sometimes, trust could be hard for Cort. The coffee shop was small and bohemian, with plants stacked with books and tchotchkes on rickety wooden shelves.

The walls were exposed brick, the floors old hardwood, and the menu handwritten on a large chalkboard. The chairs and tables were mismatched and creaked when people moved. Henri was waiting at a table with a pile of textbooks and a laptop in front of him. He looked like he hadn’t slept much, with dark circles around his eyes. His curls were wilder than normal. He wore a white sweatshirt and blue jeans, and he looked up when Cort entered the coffee shop.

A smile broke across Henri’s face, and Cort’s insides turned warm and soft. Henri really was the most beautiful person Cort knew. His teammate stood, crossed to him, and pulled him into a hug. “Is this okay?” Henri asked as he held Cort. “Yes,” Cort. “Yes, definitely.” He rested his head on Henri’s shoulder. “Let me buy your coffee.” Cort ordered a café au lait, and Henri ordered an Americano, as well as a piece of cinnamon bread for them to split.

When their drinks were ready, they returned to Henri’s table. He packed up his school supplies and then sipped his coffee, smiling at Cort. “You don’t look like you slept much last night,” Henri observed. “Neither do you.” “I didn’t. I couldn’t stop thinking about everything that happened yesterday. The game. The hazing. Us.” Us. Was there an us now? Cort wondered. He almost hoped there was.

“Same here,” Cort said. “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to talk last night.” “It’s okay. I understand. I think I needed the space to think for a bit.” “Yeah? What did you think about?” “The same as you. But mostly about…about us, I guess.” “Tell me about those thoughts.” “I need to ask a question,” Cort said. “And it might be a bit aggressive or forward. I don’t mean to offend by asking.”

“Okay.” “Did last night mean anything to you?” Cort asked.

Two hockey players, who are very different from each other, find themselves attracted to each other in this steamy new adult sports romance from queer indie author Kent Holland. Two years ago, Cort Styleton made one of the biggest mistakes of his life, a mistake that landed him in the hospital and got him kicked out of an Ivy League school.

Now, he’s at a different university—Crownbridge University in Canada—and he’s finished his year of suspension from playing hockey. He can finally hit the ice again, but the place that promised a fresh start and a new beginning might not be able to deliver. His past won’t leave him behind, and as his year begins, he finds himself haunted by the decisions he made and facing new choices that test his newfound resolve.

Henri Bellancourt has politics in his blood—literally. He has always known exactly how to work a room, how to make sure everyone is happy, while still getting exactly what he wants. This exact skill, though, might prove to be his downfall as he finds himself the captain of the Crownbridge University hockey team and learns that future opportunities come at the cost of unpleasant favors. When he’s asked to spy on the Cort Styleton, the new member of his team, he finds that Cort is far more interesting than he expected.

Forced together by their team, but sticking together because of far more important reasons, Cort and Henri face difficult decisions, collegiate and academic pressure, and uncertainty about their respective futures. When scandal and potential tragedy strike their college and their team, the two young men are forced to confront the darkest parts of themselves and question whether they can find hope and comfort in something stable: love.

1kitap1.com/en Captain and the Comeback Kent Holland Copyright © 2026 by Kent Holland All rights reserved.
