This man’s daughter was the golden child, my ex represented my toxic parents, and once again I was the scapegoat, the whistle-blower. During my brief time in this dynamic, I continually questioned why and how I ended up in such a toxic relationship.

What I finally learned was this. By our common human nature, we are all drawn to what is familiar. Consider. In my family triangle, my brother was the superstar athlete who went on to have a certain level of fame throughout his college and short professional athletic career. He was the adored, elevated, enmeshed golden child who could do no wrong.

His standout athletic ability, good-boy charm, and fame were something my parents could readily feast off and use to put them in the spotlight for raising such a rare phenomenon. Likewise, my ex’s daughter was an aspiring sports reporter who went to a well-known university to live the dream of one day becoming a famous woman sports reporter. Alongside her dad, they had dreams of her fame where he could proudly say he raised her on his own. I, however, was not the validated child in my family triangle irrespective of my more humble talents, gifts, or sensitive nature.

And I was not the validated partner in the triangle between myself, my ex, and his daughter, regardless of my good heart, intelligence, success, and efforts of kindness toward her. My personal notoriety as a nationally recognized expert with many television appearances, awards, and a large public following only made my ex’s daughter more envious and her desire to get rid of me more intense. She told my ex the only reason I made it in my career is because of the size of my breasts and my blonde hair.

She made it clear that when she makes it (which must mean on TV) that it will be due to her skill and talent. My ex did nothing to discipline or correct this disgusting declaration that she made about me. At the end of the day, my ex continually catered to his petulant, evil daughter so egregiously that he would regularly lie to me about their relationship and activities, offering a variety of reasons to cancel plans he and I had together.

Then he would go out with his daughter, and she made sure to post pictures of them on social media so I would see who was in charge. Likewise, my parents have consistently chosen to heroize my brother and nearly completely ignore my day-to-day successes and the helpful and loving influence I’ve been able to have with so many people.

© 2019 Dr. Sherrie Campbell All rights reserved.
