More than 12,000 people have signed a petition urging officials to move or rethink Big Bear\u2019s an- nual \u201c4th of July Fireworks Spec- tacular.\u201d The petition says the booming display could disturb the area\u2019s fa- mous bald eagle family as two ea- glets approach a critical stage of de- velopment. But local busi- ness owners say that after another disappointing win- ter with little snowfall, the Fourth of July holi- day represents one of the biggest tour- ism weekends of the year and a chance to recover some of the lost revenue.<\/p>\n

At the center of the controversy are Jackie and Shadow, the celebrity bald eagles whose nest has attracted more than a million viewers through a 24-hour livestream operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley. This year\u2019s concerns focus on Jackie and Shadow\u2019s eaglets, Sandy and Luna, which hatched in early April after the eagles pro- duced a rare second clutch of eggs following the loss of their first nest earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Petition organizers say the birds will be about 12 weeks old on July 4 and could be vulnerable to sud- den explosions and bright flashes as they continue developing flight skills ahead of fledging. \u201cLast year\u2019s concerns centered primarily on disturbance to adult eagles. This year\u2019s concern is far more serious,\u201d organizers wrote. The petition notes more than 40,000 people signed a similar ap- peal last year and calls on officials to relocate the fireworks launch site away from eagle habitat, consider alternatives such as drone shows and consult with wildlife experts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot claim surprise if a preventable tragedy occurs after repeated warnings, documented concerns, and overwhelming pub- lic support for protecting these birds,\u201d the petition states.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
